In the dead silence of the night, there were only sounds of screaming and burning. Ah, yes, the burning. She remembered that all too well. Being woken up -she didn't know when- and yanked through the hallways. At the time, she didn't know why they were illuminated orange and why she was so hot. On reflection, she was glad that she survived.
The entire time, she could recall with ease, she was wondering where her father was. As she felt her mother pick her up and run in the dead of night, she heard an echoing crash behind her. She could distinctly pick up her mother's panting, both from terror and exhaustion.
"Where's Daddy?" she asked.
Her mother didn't reply, and simply tightened her arms around her daughter. Oh yes, her precious daughter. The most valuable thing in the world to her.
As they exited the manor, she looked back to see it in flames. Her eyes grew wide at the sight of the yawning, orange monster swallowing her vision. Her mother set her down on the grass, still glistening with dew.
"Where's Daddy?" she asked once more.
"I'm going back to find him," her mother replied. The hood of her cloak was covering most of her face, but the girl could still see the intelligent, grey eyes of her mother.
"Why is it so hot?" she asked, rubbing sleep from her eyes.
Her mother ignored the question, and instead gave her a sheathed sword. The girl remembered her father wearing it all the time. In fact, he was rarely without it. "Take it and run," her mother told her as seriously as possible.
"But-"
"That sword is very important. Your father was going to teach you how to wield it when you were older, but I guess…you'll have to teach yourself."
"What do you mean?" she squeaked, her eyes filling with bemused tears.
Her mother put her hands on her shoulders, and it helped comfort her a little. "Take it and run. I want you to turn around and run into town. I've scheduled for some friends to pick you up if this ever happened." The girl could see tears in her mother's eyes. "I had hoped it never would, but I guess I was wrong." Her mother shoved her. "Run!" she screamed.
Tearfully, the girl turned around and ran, looking back behind her shoulder. She saw a beam fall where her mother had been standing. She wouldn't still be there. She would have seen it and gotten out of the way, she reasoned with herself. Still, she could not shake the feeling that a great loss was about to befall her.
Turning her head to look forward, she ran as fast as she could into town.
"And she never saw her parents again," Lucina finished.
The children looked at her, their eyes tragic. "Why didn't her parents live?" Nah asked.
"What if that happens to me?" Noire asked, her eyes searching the area nervously.
"Yeah. I have fur and that burns easily," Yarne protested anxiously.
"There was no justice in that!" Owain shouted.
Lucina smiled wistfully. "Just feel lucky that your parents fought long and hard to keep things like that from happening to you." She looked at her younger counterpart. "Not every story has a happy ending. But, hopefully, this one will."
Fin
This was really short (it only took me, like, 20 minutes), but I wanted to write this on a whim. I also wanted Laurent to say something, but I couldn't think of anything really sciencey for him to say. The friends that took care of Lucina after the fire were Gaius and Cordelia. The original option Robin had chosen were Lissa and her husband. However, they died in the fire, too. The only ones that survived were Lucina, Owain, and Morgan. Although, Lucina didn't see Morgan again until after she went to the past. Anyway, hope you enjoyed~
