Pocket Monsters Jet

Keisuke first saw the Pocket Monsters jet in the form of a large promotional model in the middle of the mall. It was an All Nippon Airways Boeing 747-400D, and the plaque proudly proclaimed that a 767 had also been painted in like manner. The disgust didn't settle in immediately. It wasn't apparent to others, but Keisuke had long lived under the influence of his brother (all of his 22 years, in fact) and did do partial research before passing judgment. On the left side of the Pokejet were Pippi, Pikachu, Togepi, Mew, Mewtwo, and Kabigon. Pikachu's image was repeated on the tail of the plane. He was leaping upward with a bouquet of balloons tied to his waist. Keisuke circled to the other side of the model. As he'd suspected, the other side of the plane was painted with different Pocket Monsters. The right side of the Pokejet was decorated with Fushigidane, Zenigame, Koduck, Pikachu, and Purin. Again, the tail was painted with Pikachu with balloons tied around his waist, but this time, Togepi was on Pikachu's back. Now that he'd seen the whole thing, he felt he knew enough to judge the design.

"It's ugly," Keisuke said aloud.

Takumi had followed Keisuke from the left side of the model to the right. As usual, Takumi stated the obvious, "It's Pikachu."

Keisuke scoffed, but Takumi didn't notice. At that moment, Fumihiro had come over with drinks. Keisuke took his drink without looking away from the Pokejet. It was an atrocity all right. ANA had abandoned good taste for marketing gimmicks. But there was something oddly fascinating about the design disaster. Keisuke looked at the big Pikachu. Pikachu was bright yellow and black, and the red cheeks enhanced the bright smile. He waved at Keisuke. No, the side view of Pikachu was cuter. Keisuke circled back to the left side of the model. This Pikachu was facing the nose of the plane, and he waved as if he were sitting in the pilot's seat. If he wasn't a car and plane modeler, he would never buy such a thing. But the 747 would be the same scale as his 1/200 Hasegawa VC-25A Air Force-1.

Keisuke went to the store nearby and bought one of the 1/200 Tomy injection-plastic airliner model kits of the Pokejet. Of course, he would paint the Pocket Monsters on the jet by hand. Perhaps he'd apply the decals to the lamp in his room.

Notes: I used Pocket Monsters because that's what they're called in Japan. In America, they're Pokemons. This is out of continuity slightly because the Pokejets were first painted in 1998, and Initial D Project D takes place in 1995. The model is the 1998 domestic version. With the English Pokemon names, the left side is painted with Clefairy, Pikachu, Togepi, Mew, Mewtwo, and Snorlax. The right side is painted with Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Psyduck, Pikachu, and Jigglypuff. For more information, see http://svc.ana.co.jp/eng/flights/pokemonjet/main.html. To buy your own Pokejet, see http://www.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?TOM47327. This is the only model of the Pokejet left in HLJ.
