Today had been the day Dr. Spencer Reid had waited for ever since Emily Prentiss joined the BAU. The team had arrived back in Quantico early in the afternoon, but could not go home before completing some paperwork. Spencer had finished quickly, but pretended to spend more time, while building up courage for what he was supposed to do.
He had always liked Emily, and sometimes he had caught himself wondering if Emily was the one. He had not had many relationships, and the only one he had ever wanted to continue was the brief romance he had with Lila Archer while protecting her from a stalker. But he was over that a long time ago. Lately, he only had eyes for Emily. No one else knew, nor did they suspect anything, because Spencer was not the type who often shared the details of his private thoughts and matters.
After having walked past her about five times in fifteen minutes, he had finally stopped. Emily did not notice him at once, so Spencer just stood there for a minute before tapping her shoulder hesitantly. She turned to look at Spencer who stood there with an expression on his face that could have looked like he was about to shit himself. And in a way, he was. After Emily asked what he wanted, Spencer somehow managed to blurt out the big question. She had laughed at him for being so nervous, and then she had said yes.
Now they were standing outside Emily's apartment after their date. They had gone to a small restaurant to eat. While they ate, they had gotten to know each other even better by talking about life and other less significant things. Spencer had enjoyed each second. So had Emily. She had also noticed an unexpected attraction towards the young Dr. Reid lately, and when he had asked her out she knew she couldn't resist saying yes.
"I had a really good time tonight, Spencer." Emily said while fishing after her keys in her bag.
"Yes, so did I," Spencer smiled widely, though behind that smile the sadness was hidden. He did not want the night to end. He watched as Emily finally got her keys out of her bag. Their eyes met for a second before Emily moved towards him to hug him.
"Thank you for taking me out tonight," she said as she pulled out of his warm embrace. She had not wanted to leave his arms, but she did not want to seem to eager either. She was scared of what he would think.
"Thank you for saying yes," he replied. Emily grinned before turning to unlock her door. Spencer wanted to wait for her to get inside before he turned to go home himself.
"Goodnight, Emily. See you tomorrow, sweet dreams." Spencer smiled at her.
"Goodnight, Reid."
Spencer's mind was telling him to turn around and walk away, but his body couldn't move. The same was happening to Emily. They just stared at each other, until Emily couldn't hold off any longer. She took two steps forward, closing the distance between them, reached up and kissed him. It did not take long before Spencer kissed her back, pulling her closer to him. Emily's hands were making a mess of Spencer's curly, long hair, as she had imagined doing for a very long time. They stood in the hallway kissing until they both were in desperate need for air. Spencer was panting, trying to catch his breath. Emily smiled at Spencer and kissed his cheek.
"Goodnight, Reid," she said with a smug smile before entering her apartment, locking the door behind her.
