Happy? This day was to be considered happy? Out of all the words he could come to think of, "happy" was the one least likely to accurately describe how he'd feel about this day.
Even so, Kiba had still used that word, followed by "birthday", to greet Shino today. If there was one word he wanted to describe a birthday with, he would certainly not pick the word "happy", that was for sure.
"Come on now, open it! Either you open the present now, or give it back to me!", Kiba yelled, annoyed to no end with how Shino always phased out all the time, thinking about bugs, or whatever it was Shino did.
"Be my guest.", Shino coldly and unenthusiastically replied his friend, knowing very well how much a comment like that would provoke Kiba.
Fortunately for Shino, Kiba had learned to deal with the Aburame long ago, since they'd been on the same team for about 3 years now, so instead of having Shino's thick, brown hair as dental floss when he'd bitten his head clean of his shoulders, he settled on throwing the present he held in his hands as hard as he could, right through the air, aiming dead on for Shino's face.
Shino raised his right hand and caught the small package quite far from his face, demonstrating his amazing speed and reflexes, which pushed Kiba's irritation over the edge.
Just as a little child, Kiba folded his arms, turned right on the spot and marched angrily away from the scene, with steps so heavy they'd surely leave a permanent mark on the ground, leading all the way home to the Inuzukas.
If it hadn't been for the disturbingly high collar on Shino's outfits, one could have detected a hint of a smirk on his lips. Despite how much he deeply and truly cared for his comrade, he still enjoyed teasing him, especially since it was really easy.
Expecting nothing either necessary or thoughtful, he started to slowly unwrap the small package in his hands, slow enough so that it surely would irritate Kiba if he had been there, still not too slow. Shino had to admit, he was rather curious as to what was inside.
It surprised him quite a lot. The present was unusually carefully wrapped for a present from Kiba. If it hadn't been for all the excessive tape, he'd probably thought it was from anybody.
A tiny metal box appeared in the midst of all the wrapping paper. It looked rather old, and now that Shino came to think of it, he'd seen it once before, in Kiba's drawer.
"I'll really have to thank him for this", Shino thought to himself as he stared down into the opened box at something that looked like a regular old leaf.
On top of it, there was a small, oblong thing, appearing to be a twig stuck to the leaf or something.
Surprised someone like Kiba would go through the trouble of finding this, Shino gently closed the box, treating the thing inside very delicately.
He wasn't one to get easily excited, but this time he couldn't wait. He couldn't wait for it to emerge, breaking out into a beautiful butterfly from inside the cocoon he had received as a gift from his best friend, who obviously understood him just a little bit better than he'd like to let on.
