"Hey, Tobes, I just wanted to know what time I should be at your place tonight. Can't wait to see you. I love you." Spencer ended her voice note just in time for her next class, as Mr. Gordon walked into the classroom and started his lecture on Astrophysics.
"Sooo.. have you and Toby got a hot date tonight?" Hanna leaned over onto Spencer's desk, tapping her wine-colored fingernails on her chin. "You must be dying to see your Romeo after three weeks apart."
"Maybe we do, maybe we don't," Spencer replied, keeping a straight face despite the color suddenly rushing to her cheeks.
"You totally are. Oh, I bet it's going to be steamy," Hanna sighed, closing her eyes in anticipation.
"That is just disturbing," Spencer remarked, taking out her notebook and jotting down notes from Mr. Gordon's lecture.
"Deny all you want, but we've all been missing Spoby action in our lives. The lack of updates on your love life has been excruciating ever since he took that job in Philly," Hanna slurred, sensing that her friend was feeling embarrassed. Spencer raised an eyebrow at Hanna's use of the word excruciating.
Emily poked her head in between Hanna and Spencer. "I agree. You're different when Toby's around, Spence. So- what are you wearing?" she asked.
"I'd suggest that short black dress with the mesh cut-outs and a bold dark lip," Hanna perused. "Since my previous recommendation of wearing just 5-inch heels didn't bode so well with you."
"Okay, Hanna, since when have you been using such huge words lately? I mean, yesterday in the Brew you asked me if my coffee was rambunctious. And that's not even an appropriate adjective for coffee," Spencer said.
"Well, I've been reading a bunch of books lately, which is pretty weird for me, but I'm starting to like being a bookworm. I might even buy myself a pair of glasses one of these days to, you know, look the part," Hanna replied, grinning proudly at her friend.
"Miss Marin, is there something you'd like to share with the class?" Mr Gordon asked, and the whole class swiveled their heads to stare at Hanna.
"Um, no. I was just talking about your lecture, Mr. Gordon. Sorry," Hanna said bashfully, digging out her unused notebook from her robin's-egg Céline handbag.
"Alright, then let's get back to the main theories of astrophysics..."
Spencer had gotten back to taking down notes when she felt a balled-up piece of paper hit the back of her head.
"Spence! Do you have a pen I could borrow?"
