The Fight for Justice

Prologue

" Members of the jury. After reviewing all the evidence presented in this case, can you really say with absolute certainty that my client actually murdered Mr. Hayes? Let's take in account that the ONLY eye witness was under the influence of alcohol; it was dark at the time of the crime; the witness did not actually see him kill the victim; the murder weapon had numerous fingerprints on it including those of my client, who touched the knife ONLY because he tried to pull the knife out of the man's chest in an attempt to save him. Can you put a man in jail for murder if all he did was to try and save a man's life? The DA asks why my client was there at the time- simple answer; he was there at the wrong time and wrong place. Just the work of fate. And the fact that he is a drug addict is not evidence of him being the murderer. So I inquire you to consider ALL these fats when you go into that room. Don't ruin a man's life for making the mistake of trying to save another man's life.

"Members of the jury, have you reached a verdict?"

"We have, your honor."

The judge reads the verdict and nods to the bailiff.

" May the defendant please rise."

"Jury, what say you?"

"Court case number 214763, commonwealth versus Toshiko Sugimura. We find the defendant not guilty for manslaughter."

'Not guilty' echoed through Kaoru's head. She couldn't help sobbing in the comfort of her adopted mother, Mrs. Oshima's arms. Her muffled sobs resounded in the empty hallway of the courthouse. How can that low-life scum/drug addict/murderer/thief not be guilty? He killed Mr. Oshima for fifty bucks so that he can satisfy his drug needs. Damn that bastard and his attorney. I swear, one day I will put every single criminal, who cross my path in jail.

And so Kaoru of thirteen years of age did just what she said she would one day do..
