Mel couldn't believe what her husband of three days had just told her. In effect, he told her that he was in love with Daphne Moon, he had been for years, and he could not continue with the marriage. This could not be happening to her. She had been so happy with Niles Crane and now he had run off with that English muffin. How could they do that to her? She knew that they married on impulse but marriage was something that she did not take lightly. She believed in marrying her soul mate, in marrying for life. And she thought she had found that with Niles. Apparently she was wrong.

What a fool she was for ever believing in true love. She was not a crier; she prided herself in being a strong woman, but she'd spent the past 24 hours crying her eyes out. How would she ever show her face in public again, she would never know. What would her friends think? What would society think? A woman dumped after three days was sure to be scandalous, something unheard of in her circle. Certainly this would reflect badly on Niles but her name would be dragged through the mud as well; she knew these people. Understanding and patience were not their strengths.

True she had her career but how could she face her patients once they found out about this travesty? Surely she would lose their respect in an industry where image was everything. Being a plastic surgeon meant priding oneself on having the strength of reputation and now Niles has gone and ruined that. He was so careless with her heart and her image, did he ever love her at all? Something told her that she did not want to know the answer to that question.

Niles and Daphne.. why couldn't she see it? It all made sense. The little looks, the way he was so quick to meet her needs. And she just thought that he was considerate with women. Not all women. Daphne. What was it about her that caught the eye of Niles? Mel would spend the rest of her life trying to figure it out. She was pretty, but wasn't Mel? And she had the accent, weren't guys suckers for women with accents? Was it her cooking? True she wasn't a gourmet cook but Niles always seemed to enjoy it. It didn't matter; all she knew was that she made him happy in ways that she never could. And for that she would always be resentful.
