The Same Star
"So, do you still believe the lords of Kobol created all of this?" Helena asked, a small smirk forming on her lips.
She and Laura sat on the tiny balcony of her apartment – stargazing, or at least attempting to. The bright lights of Caprica City polluted most of the night sky. But tonight the sky was clearer, tonight the sky was theirs.
Helena had been with her school teacher, trying to show her how she saw the universe. She was a soldier, a fighter, and she viewed the world in a different light to most. Being with Laura changed her view sometimes – she found herself learning from the older woman. Still, she could not fully believe in the gods. Even if her actions reflected against that view the moment she became a soldier – she had to be willing to die for her people and gods.
"How could I not?" Laura smiled back, gently nudging Helena's side. She had a terrible habit of answering questions with questions, but that was her view on the universe – there was always so much to learn.
She read the confusion in Helena's eyes and knew that her lover never could comprehend that one, such as herself, could put blind faith in deities that had not 'proved' themselves.
Laura raised an eyebrow,
"What?"
Helena shook her head,
"You confuse me Ms Roslin – how can someone so educated have so much faith in fiction?"
"Maybe it's nice to dream?" she replied, her head resting on the then commander's shoulder.
They stayed like that a while, both content just to look up at the stars. Laura was the one to pull back, asking yet another question,
"Why is someone so willing to fight?"
"Because it's necessary – to live a life like this. You can't just watch the universe pass you by."
"But you can live it?"
Laura sought out Helena's hand; her soldier looked at her with eyes that betrayed her steely nature.
"Don't leave again – please," she begged.
"I have no choice," Helena had replied regretfully.
"Will you come back this time?"
Helena didn't answer straight away. Her eyes cast away, an arm wrapping protectively around her lover who suddenly felt so frail.
"I'm never away, as long as we're under the same stars."
