Grey Eyes and Broken Lies
x
You once believed in fairytales
Didn't you, little girl?
Because how could your prince
Choose someone else (her)?
x
You look into those greygrey eyes
And know immediately
He is the one.
But he is your brother's best friend
And he is off limits (you know.)
But hope sprouts and love grows.
(As you know you have finally (maybe) found your prince.)
x
So you find yourself unable
To keep emotions on track (away from him)
When he is staying at your house for a week again.
Because he is alone at home
And would rather spend Christmas
With a houseful of redheads and his best friend (your brother).
x
He laughs and teasesteases you
When he finds you reading about ill-fated lovers again.
(Because that is what you do. Read. And hope and pray.)
x
But you cannotcannot understand why
He can complain about your best (guy) friend
Kissing you on the cheek,
When he is kissingkissing (breaking) your perfectperfect cousin
In the next room?
x
So you cry yourself to sleep
(red nose, puffy eyes, confused heart)
and pretend all is right (wrong) with the world
When the sun risesrises.
x
He returns with your brother and a new girl on his arm
For your graduation.
And you cannot understand the meaning
Of the sparkling starlight band on her finger.
(And why didn't he tell you?)
So, you put on a smile and congratulate them both (her and him).
x
But how could your prince
Decide he wanted (needed?) a different princess?
But you keep up hope and wonder (pray)
When he will come back for you.
Because that endless grey is all you see
When you finally close your (wetwet) green eyes - your father's - each night (early morning).
x
He marries her on a (sunny) Friday morning
And you hidehidehide from him all day.
Because you can'tcan'tcan't face him (not without crying)
And this is his day to be happy. Not yours.
x
And you lock up your heart
To waitwaitwait (how long?)
Until you find a new (prince) boy
That will save your brokenbroken heart.
And who can say you believe in fairytales now?
