Disclamier: I do not own To Kill A Mockingbird or any of the wonderful characters...nope, I'm just playing in Harper Lee's sandbox...I like it, it has brown sand.

It's short, but it's only from a short part in the book. Some quotes are taken directly from book, others I filled in.

I sat contentfully in a chair, reading the newspaper. It had been a quiet night, with Jem and Scout at the pagent. I felt bad about not going, seeing as Scout had a part in it, but I just couldn't do it. After that week in Montgomery, I was tired out. I trusted that Jem would take care of her. I relaxed as I heard Calpurnia messing around in the kitchen and saw Alexandra knitting on the couch next to me. The radio was on loud and I tapped my foot slightly to the rhythm.

Then suddenly, the night wasn't quiet anymore.

Someone started knocking furiously on the front door. I ran to it and threw it open. There in small patch of light stood Arthur Radley, with my son in his arms. Jem was unconsouce and his arm was bent in an odd way. I jumped forward and helped him carry Jem into the house. Laying him on his bed I barked at Alexandra to call Dr. Reynolds. Only then did I realize that something was missing...

Scout. Where was my daughter? If someone had done this to Jem...who knows what they might have done to my little girl.

"Where's Scout?" I said aloud. I saw Calpurina's eyes grow wide but then I heard Alexandra say she was with her. I let out the breath I was holding. Shaking my head, I pushed down the fear that was slowly building up.

As soon as I heard Alexandra put down the phone I walked out and picked it up again. There was someone else who needed to come to this party.

"Eula May, get me the sheriff, please." I waited the two seconds for the line to be connected when I heard a familiar, "Hello?"

"Heck? Atticus Finch. Someone's been after my children."

"What? Are they alright?"

"Jem's hurt," I sighed.

"Where?"

"Between here and the schoolhouse."

"Well, then go out there and see what you can find. I'll be there soon."

"I can't leave my boy. Run out there for me, please, and see if he's still around. Doubt if you'll find him now, but I'd like to see him if you do. Got to go now. Thanks, Heck."

"Alright, Finch, I'll be there as soon as I can."

I hung up the phone as Scout's voice chimed up.

"Atticus, is Jem dead?

"No, Scout. Look after her, sister," I said as I slightly ran back into Jem's room. I hated leaving her with such a blunt answer, but Jem had my worries right now.

Sorry it's short, but I was just interested in that part. :)
