Nightmares

By Angel-Karai

Dean's drawn all the protective symbols around the room correctly. He's salted the windows and doors and done everything as he's learnt it. He hasn't missed a thing. But all the protective symbols in the world can't stop Sam screaming in his sleep, thrashing in his bed as the nightmares in his head attack him.

He's given Sam the pentacle to wear around his neck, but even he knows that the thing that causes Sam's nightmares isn't an evil spirit that can be scared away by a star on a chain.

But when Dean wakes in the middle of the night, hearing Sammy's scream of pain and sadness, he knows that he has to help somehow. And so he slides out of bed, bare feet cold against the floor.

Sam's stopped moving now and he's awake, but with his back turned to Dean. His older brother can hear him crying but Sammy thinks Dean's asleep and can't hear. But Dean can and it's tearing him apart.

Sam feels the mattress springs compress as Dean puts his weight on them. He doesn't need to turn over to know that his brother is now lying behind him. And when Dean's arms reach forward and wrap themselves around Sam, the younger Winchester knows he's safe.

Dean knows it too and runs his hand through Sam's hair, letting the long locks tickle his palm. He kissed the back of Sam's neck and leans forward to whisper softly in his baby brother's ear.

"It's okay, Sammy. I'm here. It's okay."

Sam rolls over and Dean kisses him gently on the forehead. Sammy smiles as his brother's lips rest on his head and he can tell that the older man is smiling. Pulling away, Sam looks at Dean before his brother hugs him tighter.

"I'm here for you, little bro. I'm not going anywhere."

Sam leans forward, resting his heads on Dean's shoulder as they lie on the backs, looking up at the dark ceiling.

"I know you're not, Dean. I know you're not."
