Summary: Unlike most people Arthur broke when he gained power.
Unlike most people Arthur broke when he gained power.
Lancelot knew this even though others didn't; because he saw Arthur's emotions disappear with each promotion, watched his heart fade away after every loss.
He suspected the other knights might know, but they didn't say anything, knew well enough not to.
He knew because he watched him. It had taken him longer to see it then the other knights. He'd been the last to except him, the last to befriend the man that had stolen his heart seconds later.
He watched.
When Arthur was fucking him through the mattress and he was begging, afterward when Arthur lay sleeping for the first time in weeks; he watched him, trying to figure out how to put the pieces back together again. When they fought, swords and blood flying, men screaming, and Arthur in the thick of it all, taking the hardest blows both physically and spiritually, when all the man wanted was to help.
He knew Arthur didn't tell him everything, the one part of him that he wanted to know was closed off, belonging to another.
He'd seen her name once. Morgaine Le Fay. He knew who she was, had heard the rumors. She was Igrain's eldest daughter by her first husband, Arthur's half sib if memory served him correctly.
How they'd met was beyond him. Hadn't Arthur's mother left her two daughters behind when she'd left with Arthur's father?
He wondered if Arthur prayed for her. Part of him hoped he didn't, the jealous part, another part hoped he did, the part that wanted above all else to save him, if she was the key he might give it all up.
He turned back to the grave yard, Badon Hill. Arthur was still sitting over Kai's grave. Kai had known Morgaine, that much he and the others had learned when Arthur had muttered something about having to send Morgaine a letter.
He wonders if Morgaine knows. Knows what makes Arthur great. She probably does and that hurts, more then he'll ever admit that someone knows Arthur better then him.
He's never even met her and she's already won Arthur from him, he didn't even get the chance to fight back.
...diwedd...maybe...
