Be Happy
'We were never meant to be together,' she thought to herself.
The large bell of the church behind her rang aloud. She turned, relieving herself of one last sigh before heading in with the crowd.
She took her seat and turned to the entrance where she could see him fumble slightly as he readied himself.
"Do you really like her Shinichi?" Ran had asked.
"Yes…I'm sorry." The boy replied, taking off his glasses.
At the time, she smiled and pretended that everything was okay. But for the days that followed, she confined herself in her room. She wanted to forget not just what had happened but also everything about him period. But 17years of childhood memory held on too stubbornly.
She watched him walking down the aisle and felt her leg twitch. 'No, I can't,' she held herself in her seat. As he passed by, she forced a smile to her face for him to see.
He nodded happily and continued his way up.
She wanted to say, "No," but she couldn't. She couldn't because she truly loved him. She clenched her hand to her skirt, grasping its fabric tightly and feeling its texture between her fingers.
And then, she saw her. She turned away and swallowed a choke before turning back to the girl with another smile. When she first heard the news, all she could say to her was congratulations. As the girl approached her love, she saw him smile. It reminded her of her reason, it reminded her why she had accepted the situation, but even then, it did little to relieve her of her pains.
He was there, standing no more than 5meters away from her. She could see him, she could smell his cologne from where she sat, yet to her, he was at the other side of the world…or at least soon to be. She felt her arm rising slowly. She caught it and retrieved it to her chest.
The priest began reading.
She felt another surge of tightness across her chest but she did not show it, she refused to show it. As the words continued to run through her ears, she could feel the time running by. She realized just how truly fast time could speed away.
The priest's words stopped with the question.
Shinichi turned back one last time.
She smiled gently to him.
The young detective closed and reopened his eyes as though he had used it in place of an apologetic bow and turned back. "I do," he replied.
Ran closed her eyes at the words. A silent tear rolled down from her eye, which she brushed away immediately. 'Be happy Shinichi,' she whispered in thought as she took in a long breathe. The crowd stood as the newly wedded couple began making their way to the door. 'or since you won't be coming back, I should say, Be happy Conan-kun.' Ran finished her thought.
Faintly, as Haibara passed her, she thought she had seen a small nod as though she had said, "Thank you." 'Take care of Conan-kun,' Ran thought, watching the two exit, 'I'll always be waiting, Shinichi.'
