Beacon Hills was very creepy at night. The roads were dark and eerily quiet except for the occasional howl. Which was weird, but at the time I wasn't too hung up over that.

"I'm gonna be so late." I muttered to myself as I turned the car around a corner. The winding roads towards my house which was situated in a small cluster of large houses just outside of town were flanked by tall trees on the edge of the large forest.

I didn't have the courage to look at my watch to see the time. I'd driven to Danny's house at around 8, and this was quite a few hours later.

I was so going to be grounded.

I turned another corner and my eyes briefly scanned a boy stumbling along the road in the rain. I thought nothing of this until I saw him lift his shirt and examine something on his side. I skidded to a halt and unbuckled my seatbelt before opening the car door and jumping out, into the rain.

"Dude, are you okay?" I called after him. He looked up, only just noticing me, and I walked up to him as he pulled his shirt over what looked to be some sort of… bite. "Scott?" I asked. "Are you okay?"

He looked like he was in shock as he stared at me. "Yeah," he answered, "Yeah, I, uh… yeah."

I folded my arms across my chest and looked down at the spot where the wound was beneath his shirt before glancing back up at him. "Do you need a lift home?"

"Uh," he said, scratching the back of his neck. "Yes, thanks."

I nodded and walked back to my car, climbing back inside as he opened the door to the passenger side and climbed inside.

I did a U turn and drove even faster than I had been before. "You do live back in town don't you?" I asked him.

"Uh, yeah."

"Good. I'm going the right way, then."

"How do you know who I am?"

I glanced sideways at him, giving him a questioning look. "We've been in the same grade since kindergarten. I'm not so self absorbed that I don't know your name. Contrary to popular belief, Jackson, Lydia and I don't share that in common."

There was a silence, and Scott looked at me strangely, before looking away again.

"So, what happened?"

"What do you m-mean?" he asked, shivering in the cold.

"That thing on your side," I said, not taking my eyes off the road. "You're hurt."

"Oh, it's, uh… You wouldn't believe me."

"Try me."

"It was a wolf. A wolf bit me." He said, and lifted his shirt slightly so I could see the wound. I winced.

"Do you want me to take you to the hospital?"

"No, thanks." He said as he pulled his shirt down again. "My mom will kill me if she founds out I was in the woods this late."

"Okay, but, that could get infected so you need to, like, bandage it or something."

"I will," he promised, "Take a right here." He said and I did as told. Scott then directed me to his house, and five minutes later I was pulled up outside of it.

"Remember what I said about looking after that thing, okay?"

He nodded and grinned. "Thanks for the lift, Serena."

"You're welcome."

He smile before climbing out of the car and closing the door behind him. After he slowly-so as not to make a sound- closed the door to his house, I sat there for a few moments, my brow furrowed.

Wolves… In California.

Something about that just didn't add up.
