Behind the Mask
Many people thought Luna Lovegood was strange. She was often called "Looney Lovegood" behind her back. They thought she never noticed. She had noticed and she was sure about the identity of who had started it as well.
She knew much more than they did and more than even most of the students thought they knew. The ability had run through their family for many generations, each time getting more natural than the last. She had gained her ability from her father. Her mother's blood had only made her ability stronger.
Her father had warned her of the necessity of hiding her ability. She had, easily so, by gaining the name she had among her house mates and most of the school. She would prefer the trivial name calling to being used by other people on either side of the war that would break out.
The many different animals that Hermione and many of the Ravenclaws had passed off as fictitious were different voices that both she and her father heard and had decided to name. They told her what she needed to know. She did not need the validation of them from people who only ever learned out of books and not bothering to find things out for themselves. Those kinds of people often turned out to be useless in reality unless they changed.
Harry had been different from the masses within Hogwarts. She found Neville to be similar as well. They had accepted her despite her apparent strangeness. They understood her and never judged her no matter how strange what she said got. So Luna had decided to help Harry whenever she could ever since she had met him in her Fourth Year.
She had known that Harry would go to the Department of Mysteries that night and had already decided to go with him long before he and Hermione had ventured out into the Forbidden Forest with Umbridge. She had already figured out how to leave Hogwarts without being noticed as well.
She had also known about Harry's godfather's imminent death. There was nothing she could do about that though. She had been warned to let that be or Sirius would have been captured and tortured before he was killed.
She wasn't allowed to give warnings about the future to people who would stop what had to happen to pass in the timeline but that did not mean she could not change it, at a risk to, herself to help Harry however she could.
