Statues
It wasn't just that Billie Nightingale's mom hated statues.
Her mom was terrified of statues.
Billie had spent most of her life wondering why her mom, and her dad, avoided statues. Whenever she would ask, they would just tell her she was too young to know.
If her older sister Kathy was in the room, then Kathy would lean over and whisper into Billie's ear.
"Because they've been attacked by statues," Kathy would say. "By statues that move the second you look away or even blink."
But Kathy liked to scare Billie, so Billie learned to ignore Kathy.
Until the day she saw them move herself.
"Don't blink. Blink and you're dead."
