An Eye in the Sky

It was a source of great pride to be chosen to be among Cair Paravel's aerial guard. Indeed, the young Gryphon Basheera was nearly giddy to think she had such a choice assignment so soon after coming to the Cair. But, her lieutenant seemed confident that she would perform admirably and to do otherwise…why she'd never be able to soar as high if she ever failed in her duties. Still, on a crisp autumn afternoon, something caught her eye as she soared over the Cair's gardens. Something she had never seen before and was quite certain no other guard had seen it, especially the gossipy Ospreys, or it should have been in the rumors among the army right away.

She swooped down, not close enough to disturb those below but just close enough to confirm what she was seeing. It was no trick of the eye. A lady clad in blue velvet sat beneath the nearly-bare limbs of a large oak. Upon her lap lay the head of her lord, his features relaxed in slumber as the lady ran her fingers through his dark hair. The lady, as golden as he was dark, leaned down and kissed his forehead but he did not stir. She resumed stroking his hair and Basheera could hear her soft laughter before she banked sharply and wheeled higher in the sky, leaving the couple to their unexpected holiday. Still, never did she think she would see the General of Narnia sleeping with his head pillowed in the Princess Royal's lap and in the middle of the afternoon on Thirdday no less!
