A/N: If I owned Get Smart I would be charging ten bucks per person to read this. Seeing as this is a free website it only goes to reason that I don't own Get Smart. I'll bet it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out either. Getting back to the point, this is set in the 70's after the season ended, but nothing has changed. That's the way I like it. Enjoy, and if you find it in your heart, please review. Even if you hate it, it's always nice to get feedback.
The Last Dance
99 sighed contentedly. It wasn't often that Max agreed to dance with her, much less ask her himself. Especially now that they were married, it was very rare for the famous CONTROL agent 86 to take a turn around the dance floor. However, 99 knew better than to question as to why Max decided to dance and instead stuck to enjoying it while it lasted.
Max, on the other hand, was feeling a bit uneasy. He wasn't sure why he had asked 99 to dance. Normally, he was rather embarrassed to be seen dancing in public, but for some reason that didn't seem to matter right now. 99 looked so attractive tonight that he was drawn to her, and felt he owed her a dance or two, no matter how horrible he was.
"Max?" 99 said, waking him from his thoughts. He pulled back to look at her. "Are you alright Max? Your hand is getting sweaty." Max mentally cursed his hand.
"Yes, well, I suppose I'm a little nervous about dancing 99," he confessed. 99 smiled.
"You know Max," she began, "we don't have to dance if you don't want to."
"Well don't be silly 99," Max said. "Of course I want to dance. Why else would I ask you to dance if I didn't want to dance?" 99 smiled up at him.
"Right Max." She rested her head on his shoulder and the two began to dance again. Max took a deep breath.
"99?" he said tentatively. She pulled away and they stopped dancing again.
"Yes Max?" she asked. Max sighed.
"I have to leave the country next week," he told her. There was a pause in the conversation.
"A new assignment Max?" she helped. Max nodded.
"Yes, but 99, I won't be allowed to contact you," he explained.
"Oh. Well Max, we've gotten through things like that. I'll be okay-"
"But 99," Max cut her off, "there's a good chance… I may never come back." They looked at each other for a minute before 99 replied.
"You've been on all sorts of suicide missions before, Max," she reminded him. Max shook his head.
"Not like this one 99," he said. 99 choose to remain optimistic.
"You'll be fine Max," she assured him.
"No 99. This may be it. I've never been on a case like this before," he said. 99 sighed.
"Max…"
"99, listen. If anything happens to me on this mission I just want you to know that I've always loved you. I want you to know…" Max paused, struggling for the right words. "I just want you to know how much you mean to me. You've been my partner, my best friend, the mother of my kids, and the love of my life. You've always been there for me, and well, I just wanted to thank you." 99 smiled, tears welling up in her eyes.
"I feel the same way Max," she replied. Max took her into his arms again and they began to dance once more.
"I love you 99," Max sighed into her hair.
"I love you too Max." The couple danced as the band played away. Keep holding me tight through the last dance. Each beat of the last dance, and save me the first dance in your dreams tonight… The words laid heavy on their hearts as they secretly wished the song was a few measures longer.
A/N: The part in italics and that's underlined is from the song "The Last Dance" which I don't own either.
