Poison
It puts on a friendly face,
A kind smile with gentle words-
Insidious, cooing whispers
Which entice you.
It draws closer to you
As you hesitantly open up-
Tendrils reaching ever deeper,
Tainting your thoughts.
It suggests how so very
Trustworthy it is-
Twists your mind
As its taint spreads.
It warmly reassures you
That all is well-
God's urgent warnings
Goes unheeded.
It helps you stand
When you stumble-
Dragging you into a deep pit
You cannot see.
It asks you to lean
On it always-
Pit opens into an abyss,
Where only it can see you.
It declares loved ones
Who would intervene controlling-
Its darkness seems good,
His light seems evil.
It says to serve it,
You eagerly bow down-
Blind, gullible prey
Ensnared in its gaze.
It desires all of you,
You give it your all-
Draining your life away,
As you languish in chains.
It drops its illusions,
Friendly face revealed as a façade-
It declares itself as Sin,
The poison that destroyed you.
Author's Note: Well, this is definitely not my usual style of writing since I prefer to write happy or at least hopeful endings. However, I feel that this tragic ending is necessary in order to convey the seriousness of sin and refusal to repent, to show the consequences in a person's spiritual and sometimes physical life. This poem was written a while ago because of a situation that a loved one had gotten involved in. I suppose you could say that it is my plea to her. It is also a plea to anyone else who might be a similar situation. Whatever the sin is, however pleasurable it might seem, it is not worth the cost. Thank you for reading my poem.
