A Warm Winter
The wilted flower crumbled before her eyes. Like everything did in the dead of winter. But this was more symbolic now then ever. The wilted ends of love. The crumble walls of beauty. The colourless end that it faces.
Hannah watched from the comfort, the safety of her blanket and felt the soft tears fall against her cheeks. She felt sorry for the flower, it was defenceless and broken. It didn't deserve this end. And Neither did Hannah.
She stood up quickly and wrapped her scarf tightly around herself before gently grabbing the flower and leaving her room and walking, nearly running to the outside world, the cool crisp air, the world she was hiding from.
It was cold, it was colourless, and Hannah felt more alone then ever before, but that didn't stop her. Because in her heart she knew that she had to do the right thing. She had to bury the flower, because somehow she thought that it would make her feel better. She quickly ran to the waters edge and knelt down into the muddy earth her knees felt cold, a feeling Hannah had become a custom to these past few days. A feeling Hannah wished would go away. She dug a small hole in the earth gripping her nails into the mud and gently rested the dying flower.
Something told her to stop and hang on to the flower, to pull it out and keep it. It wasn't the only thing she had left of her relationship but it was the most important. She gently ran her hand over the petals and watched as they fell from the bud.
"Hannah?" Hannah looked up, she had barely noticed anyone was near. She saw Neville's round welcoming face as he leant up against the tree and gave him a soft, heartless smile. "Are you ok?" he asked. Hannah went to nod, but what was the point, she quickly shook her head.
"Ernie gave me this flower about two weeks ago," she explained pushing some dirt absent mindedly. "He broke up with me two days go," she said a few tears escaping her eyes. Neville kneeled down next to her and pushed the dirt over the flower.
"You both lost something beautiful. He is the only one that will regret it," he said softly. Hannah smiled uncontrollably and looked over at Neville who was now walking back towards the castle. Hannah stood up and took one last look at the grave before walking to the castle.
On her way there she removed her scarf, because it was suddenly a much warmer day.
