He closed his eyes. The sound of waves crashing onto the beige sand rushed to his ears. The gawks and calls of seagulls sounded like a familiar sound. Through his black dress shirt, he could feel the saltiness of the wind kissing his skin. The warm sunlight shining through those closed eyelids.
The sounds of the ocean were replaced by gunshots. The light was gone, and darkness filled the air. In place of Roxas' black attire, he had normal clothes on. And instead of an empty space in front of him, there was a tall, lanky man.
Grime stuck to his face, covering those beautiful dark diamond tattoos. Blood trickling down those pretty lips of the man. Those defined eyebrows furrowed into a pained expression, with those emerald green eyes locked onto the azul ones.
Roxas stared at Axel, his eyes traveling to the gunshot wound in the redhead's arm and leg. Oh, how much the man had howled in pain, but even so, he had continued to run away from the men in pursuit, tugging Roxas' hand with desperation.
What if they hadn't been lured by Demyx's eerie playing of his sitar into the goddamned club? What if they hadn't made that bet with Marluxia, which would lead to their demise? What if they had ran the other way, losing Zexion's quick eye, for the blind and dead one was hidden behind his long, raven hair? What if they had just lied in bed that night, sleeping and slipping into the darkness of sleep?
What if. What if. What if.
The two boys were lost for words, not knowing what to say or do. One was dying. One had the chance to live. Tears were streaming down both their faces at this point, as if an ancient river had forgotten to run dry. Footsteps were approaching. Voices of the enemies were getting clearer and clearer.
"Run."
The only word audible in the sick air, the only word exchanged between the two men before the men with guns approached, capturing only one of the two, mutilating his body into nothing but shambles of organs. Not even the best detective, Ansem, was able to identify the body, only to stroke his blonde white beard in frustration.
"You good?" a soft voice called behind him.
Roxas' eyes snapped open, bright light flooding into his vision. Stiff from the memories, the blonde shook his head, trying to get the horrid images out. With such slowness, he sucked in the sea air, almost tasting the sweetness behind all the salt. He exhaled, stared off into the sea once more. He eyes narrowed, peering to his side. The sight broke his heart.
There sat the beautiful redhead. Staring off into the ocean with lost eyes, red from crying. In his hands was a blue and red orb. Axel lifted the two transparent balls into the scarlet setting sun, the light piercing the two treasures. A small smile played at the chapped lips, those spider-like fingers tossing the orbs into the air, letting the sand catch them with a soft plop. Axel's smile widened, grabbing the two prizes that he had won for Roxas at an arcade. He ran towards the blue waters, his flaming hair moving in the wind, as if a fire was dancing crazily in the wind.
The orbs finally met the sea, glistening as the bobbed the water.
A cry escaped Axel. Roxas watched.
Eye heavy with sorrow, he turned around slowly, pain in his now dead heart. He didn't want to say goodbye. He never believed in such things.
"Yeah…I'm ready."
Roxas took the angel's hand, the wind carrying his words to Axel's ear.
"I'll see you in the next life."
