The Price Of Freedom

The Tanner family sits assembled in their newly decorated dining room. D.J. is married to Steve, but they did not have any children. Stephanie is married to a fellow named Gene Brychek, and it's apparent that she's very pregnant. Michelle is nearing graduation from high school but too young to be married, of course.

"D.J., would you pass over the bacon, please?" Dan asks politely.

"Sure, Dad," she replies, handing him the bowl.

"Is it me, or does it seem a lot quieter in here?" Stephanie asks glancing around.

Danny wipes his mouth with his napkin. "Well, considering the fact that Joey, Jesse, Becky and the boys moved away, it's bound to be a hell of a lot quieter," he jokingly answers.

They all break into laughter, but Gene remains deafeningly quiet as if something was on his mind. "Hey, Gene, something bothering you?" Danny asks.

Gene continues to sit in deep thought until Stephanie nudges him. "What? Oh, did you say something, Mr. T?"

"All I asked is if something was bothering you," Danny responds. "...Is there?"

Gene fidgets with his fingers and shakes his head uncomfortably. "No. No, nothing's the matter, sir," he assures. "Ah. I better head to work. Can't afford to be late again, can I?"

Stephanie rushes up to Gene before he walks out the door and gestures for him to follow her into the living room. "Gene, what is the matter with you?" she asks in a whisper. "You've been like this all week. Now what's going on? Is about me testifying in court tomorrow?"

Gene gives her a quizzical look. "Well, yes, it's just-"

"Look, honey, the sooner Roman Cipriani is behind bars, the safer we'll all be," Stephanie says.

"I can't help the way I feel," he replies. "Even behind bars that monster could still get revenge in some way."

"You know I wouldn't let him touch me. He'd see my fist before he could do anything," she jokes.

Gene says, "I don't have time to argue with you. But please think this through." Then, he rushes out the front door, leaving Stephanie standing alone.

"Did Gene ever say where he worked exactly?" Steve asks.

"He said something about this painting company, I think. I don't know for sure," D.J. responds.

Later, Gene pulls into a dark alley and is fully surrounded by suspicious looking figures. He gets out of the car and comes face-to-face with a dark Italian man in a black trench coat.

"Did you bring the evidence?" the man asks.

"No, I didn't. I've changed my mind, Roman. I'm going to let you rot in prison and won't let you touch my family!"

Roman burst into bloodcurdling laughter. "Ah. You crack me up, Gene, at your incredible lack of common sense. Do you really think this is going to end my search, do you?"

Roman then gestures for a tall, muscular man to approach, and he punches Gene in the gut, bringing him to his knees.

"That's more like it," Roman says amusedly. "Come, men. We're going to be taking a little trip to the Tanner household."

Roman steps into the backseat of his black sedan; then his bodyguards toss Gene beside him. "I'd fasten your seatbelt, Mr. Brychek," Roman suggests. "It's going to be a bumpy ride."
