Aided by a song by Green Day, 'Last Night on Earth'. Listen to it. It's awesome.

She needed this. Just the two of them, without the other Glee Losers, lying on Brittany's carpeted floor with their matching headphones plugged into their separate iPods, just reveling in each other's presence.

Brittany's taste in music was pop. Pure, uncensored pop. Anything Brittany could dance to, she had it on her iPod. Santana, on the other hand, loved alternative too much to give it up to the heavy based thumping Brittany loved so much. After years of trying to get the other to love her own music style, both had given up and opted for listening to their own music on moments like this. It certainly stopped arguments and gagging in the background.

Today though, Santana didn't even switch on her music. She just put the headphones, lay down next to Brittany, and pretended to be listening to something. She watched as Brittany jiggled her foot or her arm to a beat, or created mini dance sequences in her head. Eventually though, she ended up just humming softly, and Santana could feel the air start to fill with that feeling she associated with being relaxed, that soft fluffy floating-on-clouds kind of thing.

She reached out a hand and started to run it through Brittany's ponytail, twirling strands of hair around her fingers here and there. Brittany's smile slowly edged itself onto her face, and Santana's soon followed. It was moments like this when she wished she knew what the other girl was thinking, could plug the jack into her friend's ear and listen to her thoughts. What would she learn? Would she still love her after that?

Of course she would. You don't just stop loving someone like that. Especially not the person you've loved for years…

Brittany opened her eyes and looked into Santana's, noticing the way they had misted over with some sort of emotion she couldn't read.

"Are you alright?"

"Yeah…"

Brittany moved closer, bumping their foreheads together. "You sure?"

"Yeah."

"OK." Brittany nuzzled their noses together, giving a small giggle before giving attention back to her music. Santana got up off the floor, dusting herself off, taking her headphones off too and settled back down, this time leaving her body mirroring Brittany's. Brittany watched her little arrangement before putting a hand on her hip and smiling.

"You know, if you listen closely enough sometimes, you can hear anything in music."

"Really? Why's that Britt?"

"Because music is the words that come from your soul when you're too afraid to speak them out loud. It's like the soul's translator. Like, the bass beating in the background is that person's heart beat. The words are every thought the person's every wanted to say but didn't. And the melody is every raw emotion…ever…"

Santana blinked, surprised at how smart Brittany sometimes was. She moved closer, trying to eliminate any possibly space between them.

"And…what does the song you're listening to right now say?"

Brittany mulled it over before removing her headphones and putting them near Santana's ears. The song floating back through the air was a Green Day, one called 'Last Night on Earth', a favourite of Santana's.

"With every breath that I am worth, here on Earth, I'm sending all my love to you. So if you dare to second guess you can rest assured that all my love's for you…"

Brittany joined in with the next few lines, moving her hand to rest on Santana's chest, right above her heart.

"My beating heart belongs to you. I'd walk for miles 'til I find you. And I'm made to honour you."

Santana grinned and clasped Brittany's hand in her own. "If I lose everything in the fire," she interjected, "I'm sending all my love to you."

The kiss that followed was one of a kind.
