The cool September wind brushed against my already rosy cheeks as we lined up on the football field. My fingers slid between the small space between my bass drum and my harness, warming up the cold, squeaky metal.
When called to attention, I quickly grasped my bass drum mallets and got set at attention. Luke started marking time and we moved forward. The coolness on my cheeks was replaced with the warmth of the stadium lights. Out the corner of my eye, I saw the pit setting up. I smiled at the memory of my previous year on pit, but quickly put on my h-face and found my spot on the field. I saw Chelsea and Jennifer start conducting and that was it. Our first show of the season had started.
I placed my black uniform bag on the purple and white uniform box with a bass drum painted on the back. I saw Luke fall over trying to take of a shoe and laughed. I helped him up and returned to the upperclassmen girls bus and sat down in seat 10. I grabbed my bookbag and put an ice pack on my injured knee. I grabbed my fuzzy blanket and got off the bus and walked to the stands with Amy, Zenique, Rebecca, and Alex. We sat and watched 4 other bands perform before awards started.
It was the moment of truth. I closed my eyes and waited to hear what we got.
