Lucy gracefully walked down the staircase with Mina, leading down to the man standing in the middle of it. Mina was so excited to tell him; her face was practically glowing with accomplishment and pride and Lucy didn't think she had ever seen a more beautiful sight.

She spoke vivaciously to Jonathan as they approached, who looked as if he were forcing a smile. Mina didn't notice and Lucy was too caught up in watching Mina with a bright smile on her face to notice. What Lucy did notice was that that beautiful smile wasn't being aimed at her. What she did notice was when Jonathan leant into Mina for a quick kiss. She noticed that.

And she watched, her happy façade crumbling to one of longing as her eyes followed Mina's face when she pulled back from the kiss. She could only imagine being Jonathan in that moment, able to claim such a vision was his. If only Mina would look at her that way, kiss her that way, love her that way.

She quickly caught herself, forcing her thoughts away from the dangerous direction they were heading and back onto what Mina was saying as she placed a smile back onto her face.

Jonathan looked so confused at what was being talked about. He was so daft, Lucy thought. He didn't deserve her. She couldn't resist insulting his lack of knowledge.

Of course, Mina changed the conversation after giving a brief, reprimanding look to Lucy and urged them along down the stairs and to the cab that would take them to the party. Lucy followed after her, expecting Jonathan to trail along behind her. He didn't, though. He stopped them and Lucy knew that whatever he was going to say would be stupid, just like everything else he said. And it was.

She didn't expect him to say he couldn't go. Her face froze as she heard him say that. He wouldn't dare miss Mina's party. Not the one that was celebrating a milestone for the woman. But he was. He was skipping it for work.

She tried to fix things by both insulting him and telling him that she was paying for it all, silently urging him to change his mind, to not upset the girl. Even though she wasn't that fond of him, Lucy knew how disappointed Mina would be if he were to not come.

Jonathan simply gave her a look before turning to Mina, silently communicating with her, telling her that he had to go, that he was sorry, or something like that. At least, that's how Lucy interpreted it. Then, he was off. Lucy watched him go, angry at his easy abandonment of Mina.

Whereas she had seen how much her surgical success meant to Mina and had thrown her a party, Jonathan did nothing and didn't even have the decency to go.

She had to admit though; she was a bit proud of herself for getting that last jab in at him about financials. After all, he deserved much worse for abandoning Mina at this time. Yet that didn't change the fact that Mina would forgive him for it all, like she had been doing for forever, it seemed. She would overlook his indifference at her work, his secret hatred of it, and go back to him with love in her eyes.

Lucy may get a few jabs in at Jonathan every now and then because she knew he didn't deserve her, but, at the end of the day, Mina would still not share her affections. At the end of it all, she still loved Jonathan.
