July 10th, 2002:
"This is a PSA from Hench Co. Industries. As you may know, yesterday we suffered a massive data-breach, compromising a large amount of client records. Among the things stolen besides general shipment invoices, was personal info of clients, such as names, addresses and phone numbers.
We are currently investigating the issue, and are confident we will find the perpetrator responsible."
"Don't make promises you can't keep." I thought to myself.
Public Relations is a beautiful thing. In reality, all people do is try to calm down the public rather than fixing the core issue. It's great for people like me though, because it means it's just another gray area for me to slip through undetected. Security theater, everyone does it nowadays. They have scanners at airports to tell people they're guaranteed to be safe on the plane, ads that tell you that your stuff will be better protected in their service.
But all it takes is one crevice in the system, or a weak link in the chain, and the structure gives everything out. Sometimes it's a simple but unintended consequence of the programming, or sometimes it's tricking a person into sharing info they wouldn't share otherwise.
Hacking comes in many forms, and intel like this is invaluable in fighting the forces of evil in Middleton.
I wonder if we have a new mission? A challenge is always appreciated.
