"Wow, that is seriously beautiful," you say as you stare out of the window. The sun was just setting, painting the sky in radiant pastels. An unfamiliar pain suddenly gripped your heart, but you shake it off. Not yet.
"Hey Cupcake. What're you up to?" You turn to face your girlfriend of three years, Carmilla Karnstein.
"Hey, Carm. Nothing much, just thinking." You give her a once-over, your eyes stopping at her chest.
"See something you like?" Carmilla purred, her eyebrows doing the thing you love.
You groan and roll your eyes. "Yes, but your tie isn't done properly. Let me see it." Walking over to her, you start to redo it. "You know, most people would think that a centuries old vampire would be able to tie her own tie," you say dryly.
Now Carmilla rolled her eyes. "Not everyone dresses in suits all the time, Creampuff." You smile, but that pin is back and this time it came with tears. Carmilla looks sadly at you as you wipe the tears off your face.
Flashing her a quick smile you say, "Come on, let's go. LaF and Danny are already there." She nods and follows you out the door. The two of you walk out of the dorm and over to the forest.
By the time you get there it's already started. You stand there off to the side with Carmilla standing on your right. You look over at LaF and try to give her a reassuring smile, but it doesn't work. You can't smile, you just can't, not when LaFontaine looks so sad. And then the pain is back, because LaFontaine is crying, and Danny's crying, and Perry's dead, and this time when the tears come you don't even try to stop them. They fall freely down your face as the sorrow consumes you.
You turn and bury your head in Carmilla's shoulder because now it hurts, God does it hurt, and nothing can make it stop. You feel Carmilla put her arms around you, and hear her whispered words float through the heavy atmosphere.
But the thing that you'll never forget about that day isn't what color the sky was, or what you wore, or who attended the funeral. No, what you'll remember is that when you finally looked up at Carmilla you saw that she was staring right at Perry's grave.
And she was crying too.
It took you a second to realize this, but when she was whispering she wasn't whispering to you. The whole time her eyes were on the coffin. And just as LaF threw the first handful of dirt on Perry's coffin, Carmilla broke down. It was now your turn to hold her to whisper to her, to comfort her.
But before you could, she raised her head one last time, to look with eyes clouded by pain and sorrow at the friend she should have treasured more, and you heard her whisper, "Perry...
...I'm sorry".
