The Only One

Disclaimer: I do not own Full Moon Wo Sagashite.

I could only listen, feeling terrible for my eavesdropping, as my two shinigami friends spoke to each other in hushed tones, unable to enter my own bedroom, though Takuto had asked me to meet with him there at 9:15...

Only a minute left, I realized, staring at the face of the watch sitting on the inner side of my left wrist.

"I-I love you, Takuto," Meroko's voice, pained as it always seemed to be now, met my ears through the screen door I stood behind.

I could hear a heavy sigh; the one that always came from Takuto's lips after her confessions. But tonight it seemed different: an argument didn't follow, nor did any outbursts from the rabbit-eared shinigami.

"You know that isn't true, Meroko," Takuto's voice, gentle and soothing, replied. I nearly lifted my hand to throw open the screen door at that point, tears stinging my eyes at his blatant rejection of her affections.

"Izumi is the only one you love," he continued, his words the reason my own actions halted. Meroko loved Izumi first? "And you know the only one I love." A blush decorated my face as I remembered his confession.

Surely I wasn't... He wasn't serious!

I heard Meroko's sobs fill the room, before utter silence. Takuto sighed once more. "Oi, Mitsuki."

I jumped when the door slid open suddenly, Takuto's floating form looming over me. Giggling nervously, I stepped into my bedroom.

"H-hai, Takuto?" I asked, reaching up to untie my hair from the two pigtails I wore; my long, dark brown tresses fell to my lower back. I turned away from him to face the wall as I dragged my brush through my locks; I did not want to discuss what I'd overheard, nor did I wish to speak with him alone after what he told Meroko.

Suddenly, his arms were wrapped around my waist from behind, him face buried in my neck through my hair. "You heard all of it, you baka. You should have interrupted us," he mumbled.

I squirmed, my face covered with a blush; I still wasn't used to his sudden displays of affection. "It seemed important," I squeaked out, my struggles ending as I let my hands rest on his.

"The only one is you," he whispered after a few moments of silence.

I shook my head and broke free from his embrace. Scrambling away, I turned ot face Takuto, though I couldn't meet his eyes; his pain was my pain, though I fought it every waking moment.

"Ei-Eichi-kun is the only one," I muttered, tears stinging My eyes as I thought of the one I'd loved for so long, even after he passed. Wiping the tears from my eyes, I smiled as I finally looked up to meet Takuto's gaze.

I jumped again, however, when my lips met his, his eyes boring into my own. At that point, the tears worsened, cascading freely down my face as I kissed Takuto back, clenching my eyes shut in a vain attempt to hide my emotions for him.

When we pulled away, he was blushing slightly, and I knew my face was still red. "You know that isn't true," he told me, using the words he'd told Meroko. "That Eichi isn't the only one anymore."

I have no idea why. I just did it.
