Naruto closed his eyes, slid down the tree, and slowly, he breathed. On the opposite side of the tree, Itachi sat, looking at everything and nothing at all, and he waited. The sky darkened, the clouds rumbled, and the wind grew in strength, but neither moved a muscle; they did not bother to do anything despite the storm that slowly rolled in.
"Did you want this for him?" Naruto inquired softly, his gaze hardening as he clenched his fist tightly.
Itachi's silence was not brief. It lasted for minutes—maybe hours—before he spoke.
"No."
"Then why?" Naruto's hands trembled and for a second, his will crumbled before him.
"Because I had to."
The words that Itachi could not speak, Naruto understood. He knew it all, at least unconsciously, and he stood, clenching his fist once more.
"Is there anything I should tell him?"
"No."
The 'because' was unnecessary. Naruto looked at the sky, and slowly, the rain fell. It poured. And for Itachi, Naruto cried.
