The Maroon Dress
By Clare Quinn
Disclaimer I do not own the characters in this story. I wish the people who did would use them and create new series. I have just borrowed the characters.
A/N This is from a picture challenge the two pictures were Sully talking to Dorothy. He did not look happy. The second is Michaela leaning into sully's embrace at the old cabin.
Sully was happy to be going to see his Heartsong Michaela Quinn, Colorado Spring's female doctor. He could not believe that she had fallen in love with him a mere uneducated mountain man. She was so beautiful, intelligent and accomplished; how could he be so lucky?
With a skip in his step he neared his old homestead. He had thought years ago he would never set foot on this land again. It had caused him so much pain but now it was the place of his absolute happiness his new family.
He stopped when he saw her out, looking around the bushes that surrounded the land that the cabin was located on. He was wondering why she would be so absorbed in her hunt. She was obviously looking for something. Approaching her he spoke, making her jump as she was so intent on her quest.
Looking up she said, "Sully you frightened me."
"What ya' looking for?" he enquired.
"We had a wind storm through and I lost some things off the clothes line. I've found most of them but not my good Sunday best maroon dress," she lamented.
"The one you look beautiful in?" he asked.
Sadly she nodded.
...
A few days later Sully walked into town. Looking up he saw Dorothy and goodness: she was wearing the beautiful dress that Michaela loved.
He caught up to Dorothy and complimented her on her lovely dress. "Oh, you like it, Sully?" she gushed.
"Ya'," he said and the asked where she had bought it.
"Oh no, I found it out of town a bit," she explained.
Sully realized it was the same dress with the Chinese collar that was Michaela's favourite. A little annoyed he said, "It's Michaela's; it flew off the line the other day."
"Give it back, Dorothy," he demanded.
"Finders keepers," she snapped back, not wanting to give it back. The material and colour suited her and she hadn't owned such a lovely creation before.
...
Finally she did not feel right, so she gave it begrudgingly back to its delighted owner.
...
Sully went to visit his love and once again found her in the yard of the homestead, dressed in her beloved garment and her blue shawl pulled tightly around her shoulders. She looked sad and he came up and gave her a cuddle, asking what the problem was.
"Dorothy returned my dress, but she said she wouldn't be friends again." She sniffed.
"She'll come around, ya' wait and see," he reassured her knowing she needed all her friends here on the frontier.
"Ya' look beautiful," he said as she leaned into his embrace.
"I hope your right," she replied.
Whispering into her ear he reassured her, "Ya wait and see."
The end.
Looking at the pictures again I discovered this is possibly the same dress, how about that? Couldn't resist this little story. Chuckle...
