Everything he could have had by simply reaching out a hand extending his fingers ever so slightly. Brush the back of his hand over the soft cheek, discreetly place a hand over the other's. All he needed to give was a hint, and everything that he yearned for, that person who was so close to him, apparently unobtainable... Would have been his. He didn't know it, but how could he know when he was too afraid to try? He could never have known that going the extra mile, that simple extra step, would have brought him to home base. It didn't matter that his heart was non-existent; he was in love. He would do anything for that person. Anything. Just to be by their side. He would cross the darkest corners of all existence for this person because they were his life. His happiness lie simply with their presence. Sharing a knowing smile about an inside joke with that person was precious. Being able to laugh out loud with that person filled his empty chest with the beating thing he lacked. Hearing their voice was enough to make any bad day turn good; nothing beat a satisfying play fight with them.
He loves.
He wanted to say it. No, he wanted to share the feeling that he discovered he had. It didn't matter that he didn't have the organ; love doesn't stem from the heart, it stems from the mind and the chemical reactions in the brain. That person was his serotonin. But how could he possibly know that everything he wanted to convey was everything that person wanted to feel from him? How could he have known that they were thinking the exact same thoughts? How could he have known without ever having tried?
No, he couldn't do anything. Having that person near was enough. If somehow the feelings weren't mutual... He couldn't fathom his existence without that one precious essence gracing his life. He didn't dare risk losing everything built on trust over time for a whim. No, hardly a whim... It was a legitimate feeling- the one thing they were told they didn't have. But then, how come it hurt like it did? How could he think what he was thinking if he couldn't feel? But then, no matter how many times he prepped himself thinking: 'Today's the day. I'm gonna do it, and no turning back.' He always drew back cowardly when the deep eyes turned to meet his, and he felt like the world would end in those eyes... His world. It didn't matter to him as long as he could still sit with them, laugh with them and listen when they had trouble on their mind. He promised he would be there and do anything to ensure their happiness. What ever it took, he'd go out of his way for that one special person.
If only he had known before it was too late... No, if only he had been brave enough to take that chance. It would have only taken one more subtle hint... Just one. And everything that felt impossible, would have been his.
