SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE
Acting on her impulses would have been wrong … but thinking about him wouldn't hurt anyone. Mariska Allens was 18, in her senior year of high school, 1st chair trombone, and had loved a man she couldn't have for 3 years. Mr. Mark Alex had been the one Mariska had been infatuated with since she met him 3 and ½ years ago.
She couldn't help it; she didn't mean to fall for him. She told herself it was a "silly crush" … but she knew - deep down - it wasn't going to go away.
"Good morning!" he would always greet her. "Hey Mr. A!" she'd reply simply. "You look nice today, Mariska." he would say; and she would smile and blush, wishing … Wishing he meant it. Wishing it wasn't so awkward. Wishing he was five years younger and herself five years older. Things went on like this her whole 3 and ½ years she'd been with the band.
This year, she promised herself it would be different. Senior year … she was going to get over her band teacher, Mr. Alex, if it killed her. Senior year was going to be her year … a good year! Mariska promised herself it would be her year of happiness, no matter what. Without Mr. Alex.
"Welcome back!" Mr. Alex greeted Mariska as she entered the band room on September 2nd.
"Mr. A!" she squealed as she tackled him with a hug. With a chuckle he replied "Good to see you too! But wasn't it just two weeks ago I saw you at band camp?" She nodded, embarrassed as she turned away.
"Some things never change …" she thought, "even if it is senior year."
