Disclaimer: I don't own Rookie Blue

A.N. I was re-watching Mercury Retrograde and this came to mind as the end scene occurred.

Sam's facial expressions made this fic possible!

Hope you enjoy!

SAM'S POV:

She followed me out of the Black Penny, not that I was surprised. I knew she was a smart girl and fully expected her to ask how they knew that Anton would not try to hunt Emily down.

I answered her question truthfully, expecting her to then turn around and rejoin her friends in the Black Penny. Instead, she asked me a question that was totally unexpected.

"Were you scared in there?"

Such a loaded question. On the one hand, I'm Sam Swarek, the guy in the squad who is not afraid of anything. On the other hand, she's a rookie. If I lie and tell her no, it might make her cocky. That could get her killed.

I looked around and saw that there was no one else outside with us so, I went with the truth. "Yeah, you?"

Her answer surprised me. She's a rookie and I was expecting a yes. I was not expecting "no, I mean, you were there".

I looked into her eyes and saw trust. I also felt something more as she put out her hand for me to shake.

We disregarded the almost kiss, but that was for now. Who knows what the future will bring.

The one thing I learned tonight about this rookie is that she really cares. She seemed like a "by-the-book" cop but was willing to bend the rules. I got into my car and backed out, watching her. I pulled out of the lot and saw her staring up at the sky. I wanted to run back and pull her into my arms but that time would come later. All I could do was drive away and hope.
