Unwarranted: Chapter One

"Kagome, stay with us!" Shippou cried, latching himself onto Kagome's leg.

She stumbled forward a bit, her backpack sliding down her arm. "Shippou, I'll be back soon," she smiled, patting the kitsune's head. "I just have to go home for a while, it's been two weeks."

"It's good for you to go see your family," Sango nodded.

"I'll be back soon," Kagome said again, hoisting her overstuffed backpack over her shoulder.

She waved farewell to her friends and set off toward the well. They had camped out fairly close, making the walk more managable and Inuyasha's help less needed.

"Are you okay by yourself?" Inuyasha called, eyebrows raised.

"The well is right ahead! I'm fine!" Kagome assured him.

The hanyou scowled, crossing his arms over his chest. "Don't get yourself killed, woman," he warned. "Scream if you need help."

Kagome nodded and grinned. She knew that she'd be fine, despite Inuyasha's constant worrying and doubting of her abilities. Her bow and arrows were situated across her back, perfectly accessible if she had to kill a demon.

The sun had not set completely; a good sized piece still lingered above the horizon, casting a warm glow on her face. Kagome felt secure as long as there was still a bit of sunlight. Nothing could lurk in the shadows and nothing would go unseen.

The woods became sparse as she got closer to the open clearing. Kagome squinted, trying to spot the well through the bushes.

The well is waiting for me, just like my family is she smiled to herself. She enjoyed being in the fuedal era, but there was no place like home.

By the time she reached the edge of the forest, the sun was disappearing and dusk was settling in. Kagome hitched her backpack farther up her shoulder and shuffled across the field toward the well.

She pushed herself to walk faster, despite the weight of her backpack. Kagome was eager to get home and collapse in to her warm bed for the night.

However, as she approached the well, she immediately noticed something different. The lack of light made it difficult to make out, but the well looked different. It looked as though it had grown some appendage on it's side.

Kagome slid her bow out of it's holder and stepped forward cautiously.

She squinted as she approached the well, her fingers becoming shaky. As she got closer, the thing got clearer.

As a matter of fact, the thing began to look like a person. A messy head of black hair. White clothing.

"Hello?" she called timidly.

The person shuffled, and whipped around suddenly. Kagome froze.

"Bankotsu?" she squeaked, eyes wide.

He examined her with cool blue eyes, a smirk on his face.

"Oh hey," he chuckled. "Inuyasha's wench, huh?"

Oh boy Kagome thought. I'm dead.
