Author's Note: This is the first fanfiction I've ever posted, though I've been reading them for years. I figured it was time to give something back. And what better day than Mello's birthday? Sorry it's late. I hope the fluffy cheesiness doesn't make you barf. Enjoy!
"Mello,
Happy birthday. You refused to tell me what you wanted, and this is the result. Enjoy.
-Matt"
Mello peeled the cheep grocery store brand birthday card off of the badly wrapped present. He had nearly stepped on it as he was going to grab some breakfast in his and Matt's tiny kitchen. He shot a scowl at the closed bedroom door.
Screw Matt for still being asleep on his special day. A man only turns twenty one once in his lifetime, and the milestone was especially important to a certain blonde, who almost didn't make it this far. His eyes darkened and panic started to bubble in his gut at the memory of seeing Matt surrounded by black police cars and flashing lights. Lord even knows how the two of them were able to escape with both of their heads still attached.
Following this train of paranoia would drive Mello to dark thoughts and 'what ifs' that were best left alone and unthought of. He quickly turned back to the issue at hand and began to quickly strip the red box of any remaining paper.
Wasting no time, Mello grabbed a scissor from the squeaky drawer of the beat up coffee table and sliced through the brown masking tape under the gaudy paper.
He paused for a second, eyes narrowing, when the lid of the cardboard container was lifted. Inside was a slightly smaller, but just as badly wrapped present. He pulled it out of the first box, dislodging three thin red packages that had formerly been wedged in. He chose to open those next, guessing correctly that they were chocolate bars. 'Good quality, too,' he thought to himself.
The former mafia boss then turned back to the second big box and tore violently through the paper. Mello was once again greeted with the smooth surface of a wrapped present. He pulled out the new box and found that it was smaller than it looked.
Left in the bottom of the box, was what could only be the shiny black of leather clothes. He pulled and revealed his second (fourth?) birthday gift: a new jacket. 'Matt didn't do too bad' he thought. He followed this new pattern, gaining suspense as he tugged at the wrappings.
Inside this package, Mello found a pair of handcuffs. He was also happy to find another box, though this one was the smallest of all. He noted, sadly, that these would be the only presents he would get this year, as the only person he knew well enough to receive presents from was Matt.
Said gamer chose this point to stumble loudly from their shared bedroom and mumbled a bleary 'Good Morning' before seeing what had Mello so worked up this time. His eyes moved to the small square box and he spoke in a scratchy morning voice, "Well, aren't you gonna open it?".
"I was just about to," Mello replied sharply as he grabbed the present. Not giving the redhead a chance to speak, he tore the red tissue paper in two small pulls and found himself face to face with a velvety black box.
Unable to form a coherent thought, he sat, holding the gift in his cupped palms. Matt dropped to his knees in front of the chocoholic and opened it for his frozen boyfriend.
"Mello, we have been together for as long as I can remember. And you've been more to me than I could ever hope for, and we have been through so much together. You've always been important to me. First as a protector, then as s friend. These past years you've been a lover. And now I hope you can be one more thing for me, if it isn't too much to ask. Mihael Keehl, will you be my husband?"
Mello finally looked up from the perfect golden band and met Matt's bright, hopeful eyes. That was all the answer Matt needed to launch himself at his soon-to-be husband and kiss him passionately.
"Happy birthday, Mello. I love you"
