Chapter 1:
Arrival
"Penelope, dearest. Come here."
Penelope approached her lover, Alabaster, with intrigue. "What is it?"
"There's a ship approaching from Chaythe."
The pair looked down from the landing deck they were standing on. Sure enough, there was a small glimmer of a telltale ship heading toward the 'fabled' City of the Night.
"It's been so long since I've seen one. It's a wonder it can still fly," sighed Penelope. "Luck must be on their side."
Sure enough, the ship arrived and landed at the dock. The door opened, and out of it stepped a vampire, Meier Link, with a human woman in his arms. Penelope ran up to the couple. "Are you alright?"
Meier's face grimaced. "I'm afraid she is not. Carmilla killed her before we could leave."
"Dead in body, yes. Dead in spirit, perhaps not." Penelope turned to her love. "The Blood Amulet. We need it."
Alabaster took off toward the north. Penelope laid two fingers upon Charlotte's neck where the bite marks were, as if testing for a pulse. "I thought Carmilla had been killed long ago."
"Her ghost was the perpetrator. She tried to revive herself with Charlotte's blood, but the dhampir hunter stopped her before it was finished."
"Tsk, tsk. If you could use a person to define gluttony, Carmilla would be the perfect choice.
"Anyway, onto this young lady. What is her name?"
"Charlotte."
Penelope smiled. "She's beautiful."
Alabaster returned to the landing deck with a blood-red gem, attached to a string of gold beads, resembling a rosary. "Is she viable?"
"Very much so. It seems she was killed by a ghost. That increases her chances greatly."
Viable? Chances? Meier did not understand. Once a being dies, it is dead forever. "What chances?" He inquired.
"I suppose you have never heard of the Blood Amulet, have you, sire?" Alabaster asked the forlorn vampire. Meier shook his head.
"Penelope and I were in a similar situation when we fled up here. We were attacked by hunters. They tried to kill her with arrows but I jumped in the way. The arrow impaled my abdomen and I died later on the ship. When we arrived, the Vampire King himself brought my dear Penelope the Blood Amulet. My chances were slim, seeing as my death was caused by a physical object and not an apparition, like in her case," he said, motioning to Charlotte's crumpled form.
"Yet somehow, by some means, the Blood Amulet returned my life to me. We hope it will do the same for her."
Alabaster lifted the dead girl's head as Penelope clasped the Amulet around her neck. The charm fell into place right on her heart. Soon after, the amulet began to glow, although the light was dull.
"Success!" Penelope cried.
"Will this bring Charlotte back?" Meier asked the vampiress.
"When the Blood Amulet glows, it means the spirit has not died. Something must be keeping her spirit attached, and I have no doubts in my mind that it is your love."
Alabaster took Penelope's hand. "Now we play the waiting game."
