A/N: As obsessed with James and Lily as I am, I've decided to create a short one-shot while I waited somewhat patiently for one of my favorite fic to update.

As you'll see, I've made this one not centering specifically on a character's feelings, 'cause, you know, suspense. ;)

Disclaimer: I do not own the world of Harry Potter.

It was around a quarter past eight one dreary Monday morning when it happened.

It was the day term started up again after winter holidays in January and Lily was heading to her first class of the day with Alice and Marlene. There was a spring in her step that neither of her friends noticed, and her eyes are bright with the happiness that was brewing in her head since the second week of break.

When they reached the closed door of the Charms classroom, Alice leaned against the wall next to the doorframe and sighed. "The days sure are ticking by fast, ain't it?", she asked, closing her eyes toward the ceiling.

"The minutes, you mean", Marlene said, shifting the bag on her shoulder. "Merlin, I can't wait for lunch, I'm starving."

Alice opened her eyes and was just about to comment something when Lily beat her to it with an amused laugh.

"We literally just finished breakfast, Mar", she teased, poking her friend's stomach, and laughed again as Marlene squirmed away from her finger. "How are you still famished?"

"I'm not. Just waiting for the free hour, you know. Things to do, places to be." Marlene winked at her, and Lily smirked at the mischief dancing in her eyes.

"My god, Mar, when are you going to stop shagging Black and actually go out with him?", Alice questioned, but giggled nonetheless.

"Hmmm, I dunno." She shrugged and scuffed her shoes against the floor. "I-"

But Marlene cut off at the arrival of Professor Flitwick. He squeaked a "Good morning" to them and opened his classroom door wider for them to enter, along with the rest of the Gryffindors in the corridor.

The three of them moved to the back of the classroom and sat down. They pulled out their wands and waited for class to start, secretly wishing for another day of break- or even better- another week.

Lily was staring off into space and fiddling with her Head Girl badge on her robes when she heard Marlene humming the tone to "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'round the Ole Oak Tree". She turned to her right and raised an eyebrow at her, chuckling under her breath.

"If you received my letter telling you I'd soon be free,

Then you'll know just what to do,

If you still want me, if you still want me…" Marlene sung in a low voice, twirling her wand between her fingers.

"Wow, isn't that song five years old?", Alice asked in a quiet voice from her seat in front of Lily. She turned around in her chair and grinned at Marlene, who stuck her tongue out at her and continued humming.

"Tie a yellow ribbon round the ole oak tree,

It's been three long years, do you still want me?"

Alice shifted her gaze to the redhead and Lily can tell that she's holding back a laugh. "I think you should stop, Mar, Lily here is silently cringing."

At that, Lily pretended a cringe and snorted when Marlene gave her a remorseful look that bordered on mock betrayal. She grinned through the next lines:

"If I don't see a ribbon round the ole oak tree,

I'll stay on the bus, forget about us, put the blame on me…"

"Damn it Lily, you and your pretty singing voice", Alice groaned, having her plan ruined and giving in to her friends' singing.

"If I don't see a yellow ribbon round the ole oak tree…"

"Hey, Evans!", a familiar voice called out.

Lily looked down and smiled at the table before turning her attention to James. "What, Potter?"

"Morning", the Head Boy said as he walked down the aisle toward her. He flashed a white smile and ran a hand through his untidy hair. "Mind if I sit next to you?"

Lily glanced at the empty seat beside her and promptly moved to sit in it. "Sorry love, it's taken", she replied in a serious tone.

"Pfftt." Marlene glanced at Alice and they both burst out giggling. Alice buried it against her arms while Marlene's only grew louder as she caught the look on Sirius's face behind James.

"Lilyyy", James drew out the "e" in her name and pouted down at her once he stopped in front of her foot, which was purposely put outward to prevent him from sitting in the table behind her.

"Hm?" Lily smirked and blinked innocently up at him. "Something you want?"

"Just give him the bloody seat, Evans", Sirius groaned, "He won't bother you, and I certainly do not want to stand through the whole bloody hour."

"Then sit elsewhere." Lily spread a hand in a wide arc to indicate the tables around them that weren't already occupied, her eyes not leaving James's. "Go on, 'cause I'm not going to move an inch for you two blokes", she finished sweetly.

"Yeah James, I heard she's still going out with the bloody squid", a voice interjected. A Ravenclaw, from the deck of blue seen out from the corner of Lily's eye.

"Actually, I-"

"Well, I heard that she broke up with that bloody squid," James cut across her, ruffling his hair again, this time slowly dragging his hand back through the dark locks. "And very recently, mind."

Marlene and Alice suddenly snapped to attention at this and opened their mouths to ask what that was about when Lily huffed and pushed back her hair from her face. The whole room seemed to watch in anticipation as she stood up, expecting a row.

"You're such a show-off, Potter", she murmured in a low voice instead, and- before anyone has the time to react or even draw in a breath- she has wrapped her arms around his neck and was kissing him.

Marlene's jaw dropped as if it had absolutely no muscles holding it up, Alice was holding her hands over her mouth, and Sirius's eyes widened.

"Merlin pants, Lily…", Marlene manages to gasp out.

"Wait-what? Since when?", Alice spluttered.

"I reckon hell just freezed over", Sirius exclaimed, in what was something in the middle between a daze and triumph. "Moony now owes me ten gallons."
