"Hello. Who are you?"

"You don't know?"

"I do believe I've forgotten. I'm sorry," he added, in case his forgetting her had hurt her feelings.

She was beautiful. Part of him hoped she was his wife--no, girlfriend (she was dressed in a schoolgirl's uniform despite the maturity of her dark features, so they couldn't be that old), but another part hoped not because that would mean he had had someone he loved and still forgotten them.

"You're expression has changed. Remember now?"

"I was just struck by how much I hope you're not my sister."

She laughed, a startled reaction that sounded like she didn't do it very often, and leaned on the elaborate staff she carried. "I'm not. I should have asked first: do you know who you are?"

"You know, I realize I don't. Do you know? Is this your house? Mine?"

"It wasn't anyone's, but let's say it's yours."

"Will you tell me who I am?"

She didn't answer.

"Why not?"

"Who you were didn't like me much. Indulge my liking who you are better than who you were. It wouldn't help spark your memory for me to tell you things."

"Who am I then?"

"For the moment, someone new. What should you be called…? For now, Shin."

He hoped he would see her again after she left, but wasn't sure how big the world was. He went to the window to look.
