Only Hope
Chapter One
As he drove to his father's house, Landon kept hearing Jamie's announcement going through his head. Her dying would kill him. He was so in love that he didn't know what to do. She had become his world.
He thought leukemia was just something that no one died from anymore. It seemed like most people lived through it. He was determined to make sure that Jamie would be one of those people.
He told his father about Jamie and found out that his father couldn't do anything about it. Landon drove home and started trying to find information on leukemia. He read about bone marrow transplants. He had to know if that was something Jamie tried.
The next day he went to the Sullivans' house. Jamie's father let him in. Jamie came down the stairs smiling. She had been afraid that he wouldn't love her now that he knew about her disease.
Jamie led Landon out to the front porch. They sat down together.
Landon took her hand. "Jamie, I need to know if you tried to have a bone marrow transplant."
She shook her head. "My doctor couldn't find a match."
"So if you have one, will you be okay?"
"I don't know."
--
The next day, Landon asked the school principal to help him out. He had to find a match for her. He even went to Jamie's father to get the church involved.
Jamie wasn't popular, but no one wanted her to die. The entire Senior class signed up to help. They knew the process might take a while, but felt obligated to help, especially with their parents pushing them to help out.
There was one person who matched Jamie. It was Landon. Landon was overjoyed when he found out he could save Jamie's life.
When it was time for the procedure, Landon had his mother tell Jamie that he loved her with all of his heart. He should've been scared, but he knew he could save Jamie's life. If anything happened to him, he knew that he had tried to save Jamie's life.
After the procedure, Landon woke up in his hospital room. He was hoping that his contribution helped Jamie. Every time he could, he sent his mother to check on Jamie. He knew that he was exhausting her, but he needed to know that Jamie was okay.
The nurse came in after his mom headed to Jamie's room. "Do you want to go check on her yourself?"
"That would be great," Landon replied excitedly.
The nurse brought a wheelchair to Landon so that he could go to Jamie's room. He saw Jamie sleeping on her bed. Her father sat next to her.
"Landon, what are you doing here?" he whispered.
"I needed to see Jamie."
"She's sleeping right now."
"Can I sit with her?"
"It's fine with me."
"You can spend thirty minutes with her before I have to take you back," the nurse told him as she smiled at his devotion to Jamie. She had never seen someone so young be so enamored that he would go to this extreme to save his girlfriend's life.
Landon smiled as he took Jamie's hand. Her eyes fluttered as she began to open them.
"Daddy," she said as she looked at her father. She turned and saw Landon. "Hi."
"Hi. Are you feeling okay?" Landon asked hoping that she would answer yes.
"I'm still tired, but my spirits are up."
"Good. Maybe that'll help you." Landon kissed Jamie's hand.
"I hope so. Are you doing okay?"
"Now that I'm with you, I feel much better."
"When are they releasing you?"
"Tomorrow. You?"
"A couple more days."
"I'll come by as much as possible," he said softly.
"You don't have to."
"Yes I do."
Landon kissed her again.
"Mr. Carter, you need to go back you your room," the nurse said hurriedly.
"But you said—"
"My supervisor found out. She's freaking out. So you really need to go back now."
Landon kissed Jamie once more. "I love you so much."
"I love you, too."
He couldn't stop looking at her as he was wheeled out of the room.
--
"Daddy," Jamie whispered, "I need this to work out."
"I know. I want you to live, too."
"I know you do. I want to live for you and for him."
"You really do love him, don't you?"
"With all my heart."
