Written in a fit of boredom while technically at 'work'. Don't judge me.
Will update my other story when I can, I just needed to get this out of the way cause it's been bugging me for the longest time. Set during 'Always' so if you haven't seen Season 4, you shouldn't be reading this and I don't like you. Just kidding.
DISCLAIMER: Let me put it this way. I have a better chance of owning a condo in New York than actually owning Castle. I live in Australia, the math is kind of obvious.
ENJOYS!

"I'm done."
The words echoed through her mind, taunting her, pulling her further into the dark place that she was so sure she was leaving behind.
"I'm done."
She had taken it to heart at first, pissed off that key facts from the most important case of her life had been hidden by the one man she thought she could trust them with, who had pushed her to the brink trying to solve it, only to throw it back by pretending that what he knew didn't exist.
"I'm done."
That was the thing though. What was more important to her now? The case that had been holding her hostage for over a decade, since she was 19, or the man who had been stood right beside her for the past four years, putting his heart in the line just to keep her safe.
It wasn't about the books any more.
She'd known for a while. He stopped appearing on page 6, hadn't dated anyone since breaking up with Gina almost 18 months previously and that had only happened because she hadn't seen the signs, choosing to see Demming. It wasn't until his invite to the Hamptons that she noticed but then it was too late.
"I'm done."
They had said goodbye so many times before. She told him out of anger, he left for the summer with his ex-wife/publisher/ex-girlfriend, and then she disappeared for three months.
She had felt this tug before, the one that basically screamed "You really threw things to hell this time." Only this time it felt permanent, ripping her heart to pieces and doing more damage than that stupid bullet ever could.
"I'm done."
Maddox got away, she no longer had a job and she didn't care.
They were done.
