James had come out of the works with his new brakes. He felt pleased that he got them- they worked beautifully on his trial run at the works and now he was ready to go.

"All set James?" Asked his driver.

"Definitely!" Replied James happily.

He didn't want to be back in the works again. He spent far too long in there- he wanted to be out showing off his red paint and his new brakes.

He soon became worried that he might jam them.

One morning however, The Fat Controller asked him to do an important job.

"James, seeing as the last train of fruit never got there; I need you to make a delivery of more fruit to the market."

He walked off before James could protest.

"No I don't want to do it!" He protested. Why did he get the worst jobs?

"James you have to." Said Thomas firmly.

"But what if my new brakes get damaged? What then- I don't want to get my brakes damaged again!"

"You can only damage something if you're reckless with it." Gordon said wisely.

James wasn't so sure.

He was convinced that something would happen.

"James you can't expect things to stop happening just because you got new parts- I had plenty of those before, and it turned out it was my coal that was causing me to fall ill all the time. Even so, you don't know until you go out and actually do your work."

"You must place faith in your brakes James," added Toby the Tram Engine. "After all, you need them to stop –otherwise it wouldn't be your brakes that would need replacing- it'll be a lot more than that!"

"Exactly!" Added Emily. "Brakes are a useful thing to have James, like lamps, domes and whistles. They are all really important to an engine, but they do need taken care of or else we can't use them."

James thought for a moment

"So, if I'm careful and look after my brakes, then they won't get jammed?"

"Yes." Agreed the engines.

"Well in that case, I better get the fruit to market before it spoils! Goodbye!"

He set off quickly.

"At least we can safely say that we will reap the 'fruits' of our encouragement towards James!" puffed Thomas cheekily.

The others laughed heartily at his joke.
