"Just one more push, Sohma-san! The baby's crowning!"
Gritting her teeth, she forced her tired body to give a last heave. And then she felt a sudden release of pressure, followed by a moment of surreal quiet. Lifting a feeble hand to wipe the sweat and tears from her eyes, she craned her neck towards the physician.
There he lay, squirming in the doctor's hands. Her baby; der liebling.
"It's a boy, Sohma-san," the doctor stated, offering her a brief smile as the baby began to softly cry. "A healthy baby boy."
She watched transfixed as he wrapped the baby in a pale blue blanket, her heart warming at the sight of the tuft of blonde hair that sat on her child's head. It just cemented the fact that he was hers; that she and her husband finally had the perfect family.
Her eyes filled with tears at the thought. After suffering years of loss and hardship, that which she had lost had finally been restored to her. The perfect family.
"Please, let me hold my baby," she whispered, arms outstretched.
"Of course," the doctor answered, bringing the baby to her. He gently placed the small bundle into her hands and smiled as she lovingly embraced the child to her heart.
"My son," she cooed as she placed a light kiss on his forehead.
Suddenly, a cloud of smoke erupted out of the blanket as the weight of her child seemed to be replaced by that of a much smaller object.
"Was ist geschehen?!" she exclaimed frantically, "What has happened?!"
She was given no answer, as the doctor could do nothing but stare disbelievingly at the limp blanket in her arms. "Oh, dear Kami," he muttered. "I'll have to inform Akito-san immediately."
"What? What's wrong?!" she screamed, tears filling her eyes. "Where is my baby?"
She took in a quick breath as she felt a slight movement against her arm, drawing her attention down to the blue blanket. She watched as the cloth began to stir again and listened as a squeaking sound became audible. Heart racing, she lifted up a corner of the blanket and focused on the spot where her perfect baby should have been laying nestled to her chest.
In her child's place, however, lay a newborn rabbit. A light coat of golden fur covered its bright pink body and she noticed that it was shaking with cold. She watched wide eyed as it squirmed towards her for warmth, the silence in the room only disturbed by the animal's squeaks.
It was then that she began to scream.
