Imagine a cold, early March night, more than 50 years ago. A woman in her early 60's is driving to her local church for choir practice, just as she's done every Wednesday night for many years. But on this night, her car breaks down. She pulls over on the old dirt road to avoid accidents, but she is unable to complete the drive. The old woman is worried what people will say. She's choir director and has been very strict in the past, making sure everyone arrives no later than 7:25 PM. This is a small town, very little crime. So she decides to walk the rest of the way. As she's walking she glances at her watch. It's 7:27, she's already late, and still has a way to walk. Just then she sees an explosion in the distance, fire leaps into the sky. The fire department would later determine that the furnace in the church basement malfunctioned, causing the fiery explosion. The old woman is grateful to be alive, but worried that her friends and neighbors are gone forever. When she finally gets to the church the fire department is already putting out the fire, which has almost completely destroyed the church. She also sees the other members of her choir. Some visibly shaken, but otherwise unhurt. As they compare stories it seems they all have their own reasons for being late tonight. One teenager was working on her homework, got stuck on a math problem. One young man got caught up listening to a radio program, lost track of the time. One woman, who lived right across the street from the church was feeling ill. She decided to lay down for a few minutes efore heading to choir practice, only to be awoken by the explosion itself. More than a dozen people, scatterred throught the small town, each with their own individual reasons for being absent on this particular night. Seems like a strange coincidence. Seems hard to believe. Unless ofcourse one believes that a higher power was looking out for them.
