A very short one shot that could be connected to true friendship lasts

It was a cold starry night; a lone boy lay against a tree trunk staring up at the clear sky thinking of the one person he didn't put a mask on for. He had grown up with the boy and trusted him with his life. He had been forced to leave him after the world championships and was racked with guilt at leaving him with Boris. Sure he was worried about the rest of the team but he was the main worry.

The many scars on his back ached at the memory of the sociopath who had caused them. The same kinds of scars were on his friends back. The scars were a constant reminder of the torture they had to go through. He remembered all the things he had to do to keep his friend strong. Even the things most people took for granted made a big difference to his friend like making him something for his birthday.

He sighed as he thought about the many times he and his friend snuck through the bars on their cells to the roof of the prison like building they were kept in. Just to watch the stars in the sky twinkle promising them the possibility of freedom in the future. Even after the many years and watching those around them crumble and break under the pressure they managed to keep going never letting their dream of freedom go.

Those who knew the boys always thought of them as cold or stuck up mostly both but they were the exact opposite. They were very protective of their friends the people they'd come to considered family. Always looking over them ready to help in any way they could.

This was the reason why he was so guilt ridden. He was helpless he couldn't protect the person who meant more to him than anyone else ever had. The one person who he would die for. The one person who he cared for more than his own family. He was helpless and that fact killed him, made him feel weak and the one thing he hated more than helplessness was weakness.

He always tried to stop himself from being weak by training ridiculous amounts of time but sometimes he couldn't help it and all he could do was pray and hope his friend would make it out alive. He could do nothing for his friend. He wanted to scream at how useless he was right now but restrained himself convincing himself that the boy was strong and wouldn't break under Boris.

"Kai! Come on it's time for supper!" The boy leaning on the tree looked towards the house he was staying in with his unlikely friends pushing himself up to go inside. Taking one last look at the star covered sky he whispered

"I promise I'll get you the freedom I've been granted" resetting his emotionless mask he followed his teammate into the house.
