There was a mechanical groan and a jarring lurch of the truck's cabin as the vehicle rolled to a stop. Jade let out a noise of disgust as Beck repeatedly tried the ignition, to no avail. He turned to his girlfriend.
"Well, we're not going anywhere." he said slowly,
"Well…fix it?" Was her reply, as if the solution was as simple as that.
Beck shook his head.
"It's pitch black out there, and we have no tools. We're going to have to call for a tow." He patted a hand around his pocket areas.
Jade waited expectantly, but his smile faltered.
"Umm, babe?" He chuckled wryly.
"Yeah?"
"I think I left my phone at school. We're gonna have to use yours."
Jade raised her eyebrows. "Mine? Mine is completely dead."
Beck leaned back against his seat with a sigh. "Unbelievable. I told you to charge it before we left." He mumbled.
At his snide remark, Jade's anger flared. "Oh, because obviously I knew this would happen!" she chirped in a tone of false sweetness.
Beck held up a hand and shook his head. "I'm sorry. Let's not argue right now."
Jade folded her arms. "Fine by me," she snapped. "How are we getting home?"
It was an abnormally cold night. Beck squinted through the windshield, which was beginning to fog up in the chilly air. He recognized a street sign, and gestured to it. "We're only about a quarter mile from Tori's house," – he ignored Jade's derisive sigh – "if we start walking now, we can call a towing company before it gets too late."
"But…it's cold out. I hate the cold." Jade said grumpily.
"You're going to be a lot colder if you stay here in the truck that doesn't start." Beck reasoned.
Seeing his point, but still feeling resentful, Jade followed his lead and got out of the truck.
"Fabulous." Jade huffed, able to see a cloud of her breath in the night air. She bitterly kicked at the gravel with the toe of her boot, walking at a purposeful distance from Beck.
They were a few yards away, when Beck ran back to the truck, opened the door, and began rummaging for something in the glove compartment.
"What are you doing?" Jade called. She was looking skeptical, but her curiosity was piqued.
Beck jogged back to her. He pulled out a bundle from under his arm, which unfurled into a long woolen scarf. He slung it around the back of Jade's neck, holding onto both ends. He pulled the material taut, bringing them closer together.
"I didn't want you to be cold." He touched the tip of his nose to hers, grinning.
Jade initiated a lingering kiss. While their faces were still close, she couldn't help smiling bashfully.
"Glad I have you to keep me warm."
Beck nodded graciously; he recognized (and welcomed) an apology when he saw one.
"Always."
