It's Not Easy Being Green

I'd dearly love to smack the person who decided all Slytherins were evil.

What makes Gryffindors so great, anyway?

They're known for being brave and courageous. They're the ones who are most likely to dash off to rescue the damsel in distress, to stand up for the little guy, to make a big-ass, overly dramatic entrance and steal the scene. They'll start monologue-ing at the drop of a hat. They stand for loyalty, the hero's journey and all that Star Wars bullshit.

You know what else they do, though?

They act without thinking. They jump to conclusions. They yearn to be the center of attention every blasted minute of every blasted day. To them, it's all about burning emotion and never about cold, hard logic. Before you know it, they're the ones who need bloody rescuing.

Fat lot of good that does the rest of the world.

And Slytherins? All that bands us together is our desire to reach our goals, and the fact that we'll do a lot of things that most people wouldn't to get there. You know what I say to that? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. How can you possibly know the limits of what people can do if you never stretch them, if you're too worried about offending or damaging someone to try anything new? Humankind has made great strides by taking risks and being edgy, and I'm willing to bet it wasn't thanks to the line-toeing, ass-kissing, sanctimonious little Gryffindors.

It's true, some Slytherins have been nasty, vicious people, and some Slytherins have gone on to inspire fear and hatred in the minds of common citizens, but you know what? Some of them haven't. In fact, some of them have done absolutely nothing at all.

All this prejudice can be hard to take, especially for those hopeful first years who run up to get Sorted and end up in Slytherin. They hear the beginnings of the whispering that will forever follow them when that name is called, and are left wonder "why?" as they trudge to the table at the end of the line. I mean, if the House is so bloody terrible and evil, why is it still here?

I'll tell you why.

It's because, contrary to popular belief, the noble House of Slytherin is not composed of immoral, ruthless, bloodthirsty heathens who long to conquer the world in a sea of flames and destruction. It is composed of people who are not afraid to go after what they want, instead of waiting for it to just fall into their laps. These people refuse to let emotions and irrationality cloud their judgment. My fellow Slytherins and I kick ass harder than anyone else at Hogwarts because not only are we driven, determined, and focused, we have to put up with more crap from the rest of the school, and the Wizarding World in general, than anyone else.

Except house elves. And werewolves. And sometimes centaurs.

In short, it's just not easy being Green.

A/N: I always kinda felt that the Slytherins got a bum wrap from everyone else.

Reviews are love.
