"Inside Joke"
By: a. loquita
Pairing: Booth/Bones
Warnings/Spoilers: None
Brennan looked up from her computer when Booth appeared in doorway of her office.
"Something wrong?" she asked.
"No."
She reminded him, "I told you that the results from the scans won't be finished until later."
"That's not why I'm here." He moved now, finally, and yet his steps were unusually reluctant. She felt that Booth always walked with purpose, but not today. He was hesitant, "Look, about last night—"
"Not this again."
"Yes, this again." He really didn't want to sit down, but pacing wasn't a great option either. "Why can't you just admit that sex means something?"
"It does." She hit save on her computer. This might take a while. "It can be a sign that there are… deeper feelings between two people, but it can also be just sex."
"C'mon, Bones. You can't really think that after two people share such an intimate thing, open up in that way, that it doesn't mean something? It doesn't change things between them?"
Angela approached Brennan's office and caught a little of the exchange. But before she had a chance to back away, the two FBI partners spotted her and looked at her expectantly.
"Ah, I can just… come back later…" Angela offered.
"No, it's fine. Booth and I were done."
"Bones, look, It's just that I, I…" But something made him decide not to push it further, and instead give the women their privacy. "Call me when the scans come back."
"I will."
Angela sat in one of the chairs opposite Brennan's desk once Booth was gone. "So…"
"Yes?"
"You and Booth, huh?"
"What? That was... That was about last night."
"I figured," Angela said.
"I stopped by Booth's place and his 78-year-old neighbor was inviting in a gentlemen. Booth told me that the man comes by every Wednesday for two hours and then leaves. Which I think is pretty impressive for his 78-year-old neighbor. But Booth can't seem to understand that sometimes sex between two people is simply a release, not something wrapped up in any kind of commitment or emotional attachment. As a man, I'm quite surprised by his opinion."
Angela had been listening, almost not believing. "So, when I came in here, you two were talking about—"
"Booth's neighbor and her gentleman caller. Why? What did you think we were talking about?"
"Nothing. Inside joke, I guess." Angela smiled. "Sweetie, one day, you are going to figure it all out. And when you do, I hope I'm here to see the expression on your face."
The expression currently on Brennan's face was one of perplexity. "OK."
"Today is not that day."
"Did you come in here for something else?"
Angela slid a file folder across the desk. "I was able to reconstruct the photograph from the burned fragments found at the scene."
"Good work, Ang."
"It's not very clear, you have to use your imagination to see the whole picture. But I'm guessing with some practice, you might get there."
