-1Author's note - In this story Jack does leave for Chicago with his family and he's been gone almost two years.
Jack sighs as the plane hit's the runway, he quickly grabs his baggage and hails down a taxi. Being back didn't make things easier, he thought it would, maybe he'd feel it the moment he got close again but in reality it still hurt like hell. Jack gets out at his destination and heads off to see an old friend.
'It's good to see you again Jack.'
'You too Chet.'
'I heard you'd left for Chicago.'
'Yeah…..biggest mistake of my life.'
'How so?'
'I miss her.'
'Is that why you're back?'
'Would you call me crazy if I said yes?'
'Crazy, no. Out of your mind yes.'
Jack laughs slightly.
'You think it's too late.'
'No, I know it's too late.'
'You seem confident.'
'I've heard this one before.'
So, yea, you said you heard this one
Maybe
lived it twice
But
with bias on my side
I
swear I've got a different one
To
be laid to line
And
with a dime for your advice
'I
know what you're thinking Jack but this one will be no different.'
'It could be.'
'No it's always the same. I'll tell you how it is.'
You never saw a man
Good luck you know you better
just forget it
Make
a fist and grab so fast he said
Cause
love is never in the same place that you left it.
'But she loves me.'
'Correction she loved you and you Jack were a fool, you didn't love her back.'
'I've always loved her.'
'Then you didn't love her enough.'
'That's not fair, I had no choice. My daughters needed me.'
'And they don't need you now?'
Jack looks to the floor with tears in his eyes.
'She'll forgive me.'
I said you wouldn't understand
This
was long-term love
She
was perfectly described
'As perfect as she is Jack, you broke that girl's heart. I don't think it can be mended and if…and I mean if, if someone can fix it, it won't be you.'
'I still remember the last time I saw her, the last time I broke that heart.'
'I'm sure she remembers too, that hurts her most. Remembering you leaving and not being able to stop you.'
'We're the same, we understand each other.'
'No Jack. She's pink and your black, she's broken and you're bold, there's too much between you now.'
And what she wore when we last met
It
was pink and black
A
study in scarlet up inside
'I can mend a broken heart.'
'Could you mend your wife's?'
Jack swallows ' No.'
'No.'
'But I didn't try, my heart was still here.'
'That won't mean anything to Sam now, she'll think you're only saying it to get back into her bed.'
'But I'm not, I really mean it.'
'Oh Jack I know but she can't trust you anymore.'
You
never saw a man
He said good luck
With
bigger eyes that understand
you know you better go and get her
Cause
love is never in the same place
if you left her
'I'll make her smile again.'
'I sure hope so Jack, I sure do.'
