It was when there was an entomologist seminar in San Francisco, I almost decided not to go, but thought it would be good to see some of my close friends and to hear all of the latest discoveries that entomologists around the world had found over the course of a year.
As I walked out of a conference room I bumped into a person so I quickly apologized. Her papers had fallen on the floor so we knelt down to pick them up. As we both reached for the last paper our fingers touched. She looked up at me and our eyes met. It felt as though time had stopped. These are how fair tales are made. There she was smiling, the curls of hair flowing next to her face. Her eyes sparkled like stars. As we slowly got up, she introduced herself.
"Hello, I'm Sara Sidle," she said reaching out her hand as she held the messed up papers in the other.
"Hello, I'm Gil Grissom," I grinned slightly and shook her hand. "I'm sorry about that. I hope you're okay. I wasn't watching where I was going," I apologized again. I remembered I wasn't very good with women, particularly beautiful women.
"I'm okay. I promise. Well thanks for helping," she said as we continued to gaze at one another.
She was the first to move away.
"Well I better get going," she continued to say pointing behind her. I don't know where I got the courage but as she turned around to leave, I stopped her.
"Ms. Sidle, would you like to have coffee later, that's if you're available."
"That sounds great, is seven o'clock okay? You can pick me up at my apartment," she said with a half grin.
"See you in a little bit," I said giving her a small wave.
As she turned to leave she looked over her shoulder and smiled. I will never forget that smile.
As I got out of the cab I remembered how nervous I was. I was never any good at this sort of thing but there was something about that smile. I longed to see it again. She admired the promptness. I admired her dress.
As we sat in Starbucks we talk about work and other things for a while, then we headed back home. We've been together ever since.
"But Daddy, what did you do at home?" the brown eyed curly top brunette asked curiously.
"I will tell you one day when you're older, Honey." Grissom said smiling as he tucked in his daughter for bed.
"Love you Daddy," the tired girl said.
"Love you too," he said closing her door. As he walked away he smiled knowing that night back at the house was the night that second precious thing in the world was conceived. The first was his love for Sara.
