Aura: The Last Airbender
Me: So, this is my version of Avatar: The Last Airbender, only Aang is a 16 year old girl named Aura. Well technically Aura is a 116 year old girl, but still, he's a she. Then again, she can also be considered my OC since she doesn't act like Aang in a lot of aspects that'll be revealed. Anyway, this is, as you may have figured out if you've read the original, a remake since I've grown in my writing skills and believe I can make this story better. Anyway, for those who haven't read the original (and never can since I've deleted the original chapters) this is a Fem!Aang/Zuko story, because I love Dante Basco's voice (I'm even writing a American Dragon:Jake Long fanfic), and Zuko is one of my favorite animated guys. Now, Katara, disclaimer please!
Katara: Awsmpup doesn't own the plot or characters of Avatar: The Last Airbender, except for Aura since she is a part of her messed up mind.
Me:...
The Female In The Iceberg
Katara's POV
My Grandmother used to tell me stories, about old days, a time of peace. When the Avatar kept peace between Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. But that all changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, only he could stop the fire benders. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years have past, and the fire nation is nearing victory in the war. Two years ago, my father and the men of my tribe journeyed to the Earth Kingdom to help fight against the fire nation, leaving me and my brother to look after our tribe. Some people believe that the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads, and that the cycle is broken. But I haven't lost hope. I still believe, that somehow, the Avatar will return to save the world!
Third POV
Katara and her older brother, Sokka, were floating down the icy waters of the Southern Water tribe, looking for food. "It's not getting away from me this time." Sokka remarked, "Watch and learn Katara, this is how you catch a fish." The younger teen just gave him a look. She was slowly growing sick of his over-confident attitude. Oh, who was she kidding, she's been sick with it for years.
Katara then saw a fish swimming near her, so she took off her glove, and slowly breathed to calm herself before waterbending the fish out of the water. "Sokka, look!" Katara exclaimed excitedly, while waterbending the ball around. She was still getting the hang of her waterbending, so Katara was very happy that she was able to do this little bit.
"Katara, shh! You're gonna scare it away!" Sokka whispered. "Mmm, I can already smell it cooking."
"But Sokka, I caught one!" Katara tried to tell him. She loved her brother, really she did, but he needed to stop acting like she couldn't help out just because she was a girl. His sexism was going to get him in trouble one day. Katara waterbended the fish over her brother when he ignored her, in an effort to show him. However, as he pulled his spear back to stab the fish in the water, he ended up popping Katara's waterball, releasing the aquatic animal inside. "Hey!" Katara exclaimed as the fish leapt back into the ocean and the water from her ball splashed onto her brother.
"Why is it that everytime you play with magic water, I get soaked!" Sokka remarked in annoyance.
Katara scoffed, "It's not magic, it's waterbending. And it's-"
"Yeah, yeah, an ancient art, unique to our culture, blah, blah, blah" Sokka cut her off. He wrung his ponytail out as he continued his rant, "Look I'm just saying, that if I had magic powers, I'd keep my weirdness to myself."
"You're calling me weird? I'm not the one who makes muscles to myself everytime I see my reflection in the water." Katara raised an eyebrow as she watched him do exactly as she just said.
Sokka looked back at her, not really having been listening. Suddenly, their boat shook and they both cried out in surprise as their boat got caught in the water's current. Sokka hurriedly tried to row them out of harm's way.
"Watch out!" Katara warned. Sokka grunted as he continued his quest to save them. "Go left, go left!" his sister ordered. Their boat got hit by a bunch of small pieces of ice before being smashed between two larger pieces, crushing it to splinters. Katara and Sokka jumped and slid onto a small, flat piece of ice. Katara grunted, as she slid to the edge of the ice block. Luckily, she stopped before she could fall in.
The two became dishearted at the fact that they were now stranded. Katara crawled to her brother, in the middle and couldn't hold back the glare she gave, "You call that left?"
"You don't like my steering, well maybe you should have waterbended us out of the ice" Sokka said sarcastically, while moving his hands in a wave like motion.
"So you're saying it's my fault!" Katara exclaimed.
"I knew I should have left you home!" retorted Sokka. "Leave it to a girl to screw things up!" Katara glared at her brother, fed up with his sexism. She regretted not having exploded at him for it years agos.
"You are the most sexist, immature, pig brained, UGH, I'm embarrassed to be related to you!" Katara yelled, while swinging her arms back with each word. An iceberg behind them began to crack at her unknown bending. Sokka only took an unimpressed glance towards her, before noticing the large iceberg that she was slowly deteriotarating. "Ever since Mom died, I've been doing all the work, while you've been playing soldier!"
"Katara" Sokka tried to warn, hiding his face in fear of the iceberg finally breaking apart and falling on top of them.
"I wash all the clothes! Have you ever smelled your dirty socks! Well let me tell you! It's unpleasant!" Katara continued.
"Katara, settle down!" Sokka demanded with a look of horror on his face.
"NO! That's it, I'm done helping you!" she exclaimed, "For now on, you're on your OWN!" She swung her arms back one more time, only this one was a little more powerful, finally cracking the iceberg completely. Katara heard its cracking and turned around, gasping at the sight with Sokka. The iceberg split open and sunk into the water, creating a massive wave that made Katara and Sokka's little piece of ice surf across the ocean.
"Ok, you've gone from weird to freakish, Katara." Sokka remarked.
Katara looked back at where the iceberg was, completely floored at her power, "You mean, I did that?"
"Yep, congratulations" he replied sarcastically.
Suddenly, the water in front of them began to glow and bubble. The duo looked at the glowing water in confusion, before quickly moving away when they noticed the glowing become brighter, as a piece of ice rises from the water. Katara and Sokka gasp and gape at the new arriving ice. Katara walked forward towards it, only to have Sokka pull her back protectively. The younger sibling then noticed a female figure inside the ice, and raised her eyebrow as the girl opened her eyes, to reveal the same bright blue glow escaping from them.
"She's alive!" Katara exclaimed. She grabbed Sokka's boomerang from him, much to his displeasure, and fearlessly ran towards the ice to free the poor girl trapping within.
"Katara!" Sokka yelled, running after her, "We don't know what that thing is!" He grabbed his spear, ready to use it against the girl in the ice if she should be an enemy. They hopped on the little ice blocks toward the giant iceberg, but Katara, having a head start, arrived there first. She began to hit the block, grunting at how hard it was to break the ice. She hit it one last time, before the block cracked, spewing out air. It broke in half, and a giant beam of light shot towards the sky, bringing the attention of many creatures towards that direction.
Zuko's Ship
Zuko stood at the front of his ship, watching the beam of light in the distance, shocked for a moment, before growing determined. "Finally" he muttered, relieved and happy that his search was finally over. "Uncle!" He called, turning towards the older man, while pointing at the beam, "Do you realize what this means?"
"I won't get to finish my game?" Iroh asked in disappointment.
"It means my search. It's about to come to an end." Zuko retorted, turning around again to face the beam as his uncle sighed in exasperation. "That light came from an incredibly powerful source! It has to be him!"
"It's just the celestial lights. We've been down this road before, Prince Zuko. I don't want you to get too excited for nothing" Iroh remarked, still playing his game. "Please, sit. Why don't you enjoy a calming cup of Jasmine tea."
Zuko turned back towards his uncle. "I don't need any calming tea! I need to capture the Avatar! Helmsman, head a course for the light!" the prince commanded, pointing toward the area the beam was.
With Sokka and Katara
Sokka had a look of determination on his face as he stood with Katara, and held his spear up, ready to attack. However, he slowly lowered it, and, along with Katara, had a look of surprise on his face as his determination decreased into awe.
A girl slowly made her way out of the giant hole the beam had created in the iceberg, her tattoos and eyes glowing as Sokka regained his senses and raised his spear once more. The girl stood at the edge of the ice, and then the lights all faded, along with the glow in her tattoos and eyes, before she fell down the wall towards Sokka and Katara.
Katara gasped in surprise and worry before she quickly rushed forward, catching the girl. The waterbender sat down, resting the girl in her arms onto her lap. Sokka poked the female his sister was holding in head with the end of his spear. Katara simply looked at him in annoyance.
"Stop it!" She snapped sternly, moving one of her arms back the keep him from poking the mysterious teen. She laid the girl down onto the ground and checked her pulse, relieved that it was beating. The other female began to wake up, revealing sparkling gray eyes. She let out a tired grunt and looked up to see Katara.
"I need to ask you something" the girl said quietly, her voice sounding exhausted, but also slightly happy, as though she hadn't been stuck in an iceberg.
"What?" Katara inquired.
"Please come closer."
Katara moved closer to the girl to hear her better, "What is it?"
The teen slowly blinked, before instantly perking up and grinning excitedly, "Will you go penguin sledding with me?"
Katara blinked and stared at her, not having expected that. "Uh, sure, I guess." The girl glided up, using the air to stand on her feet.
Sokka let out a small shocked scream before quickly pointing his spear at the girl, all the while freaking out at her sudden 'magic'. It's bad enough that his sister insisted they help this stranger, who may or may not be an enemy/spy for the Fire Nation, but now this person had some sort of strange ability that could help her fight them?!
"What's going on here?" the girl asked curiously, scratching the back of her head in confusion.
"You tell us! How'd you get in the ice?!" Sokka exclaimed, pointing at her. "And why aren't you frozen?" The warrior then decided it was a smart idea to begin poking her stomach with his spear.
"I'm not sure" she replied, swatting away his spear, while looking around. A deep moan is heard from behind the ice wall, making the girl gasp and try to climb her way up the wall. She managed to finish her quest and slide down the side before jumping onto the giant bison below. "Appa!" she exclaimed happily, as she bent towards his eye, "Are you alright?"
However the animal simply continued to rest his eyes in exhaustion, "Wake up buddy!" She ordered the bison, opening his eye. The bison closed his eye once again, not feeling like completely waking up. The girl jumped off him and tried to open his mouth.
The sibling duo walked around the wall to them, looking surprised at the huge animal, Sokka's jaw dropping open. They watched the girl try to open the bison's mouth in an attempt The bison opens his mouth and give a long lick to the girl.
"You're ok!" The girl laughed, wrapping her arms around his head as much as possible (but even then she couldn't even reach the sides). The bison stood up and shook out his fur a bit, as Sokka moved a little closer.
"What is that thing?" he questioned apprehensively, unsure what to make of the giant before them.
"This is Appa, my flying bison" the female teen explained.
"Right, and this is Katara, my flying sister" Sokka replied sarcastically. Katara and the girl both exchanged a raised eyebrow at him. Appa began to sneeze, making the girl worried, before she quickly ducked out of the way. Her pet sneezed out bison snot and it hit Sokka. The warrior freaked out at the mucas now covering him, as anyone naturally would, and hurriedly tried to get the snot off of him. Katara just smirked at him, believing he deserved it. It was also pretty funny seeing him spaz around. Maybe this was the spirits' trying to punish for his sexism!
"Don't worry it'll wash out" the stranger told him. Sokka wiped his face, but the snot stretched, connecting to his hand and his face, instead of wiping off. Both him and Katara were disgusted at the sight, Sokka more so as it was happening to him, while the stranger simply rubbed her pet's head, "So, do you guys live around here?"
"Don't answer that" Sokka commanded Katara sternly, while pointing his spear at the girl. The female put her hands up in a surrender pose, backing away from the sharp tip. "Did you see that crazy bolt of light, she was probably trying to signal the fire navy."
"Oh yeah, I'm sure she's a spy for the fire navy. You can tell by that evil look in her eye" Katara remarked sarcastically. The girl gave them an innocent grin with mischievous eyes. "The paranoid one is my brother, Sokka" Katara told her as Sokka gave a small, cautious wave. "You never told us your name."
"I'm Aa-aa-" The siblings looked at her in confusion when she suddenly stopped her sentence, but watched in shock as the girl sneezed and flew up into the air. The girl fell down and slid on the ice with her feet. "I'm Aura" she answered, wiping her nose.
Sokka and Katara looked at her with shock, as the male sibling pointed towards the sky, "You just sneezed and flew 10 feet in the air."
"Really? It felt higher than that." Aura remarked, looking in the air confused.
Katara gasped in realization, "You an airbender."
"Sure am" the older teen stated proudly.
"Beams of light, flying bison, airbenders, I think I have midnight madness." Sokka said, "I'm going home, where stuff makes sense." He walked to the edge of the block, before remembering that they were stranded.
"Well if you guys are stuck, Appa and I can give you a lift" Aura offered. She airbent herself onto Appa, sitting on his head.
"We'd love a ride. Thanks" the younger girl accepted.
Sokka turned around and glared at them, "Oh no, I'm not getting on a giant, fluffy snot monster." They were insane for even thinking he'd do that!
"Are you hoping some other monster will come along and give you a ride home, you know before you freeze to death" Katara asked sarcastically, while Aura helped her onto Appa. Sokka looked over at them about to retort, but stopped and sighed, reluctantly giving into his sister's wishes. He sat on Appa, pouting the entire time, as Katara sat beside to him, completely excited.
"Ok! First time flyers hold on tight!" Aura exclaimed. She gripped Appa's reins tightly, preparing for the future flight. "Appa, yip-yip!" She commanded, snapping the reins. Appa moaned and snapped his tail, jumping into the air. Before he belly-flopped into the water. "Come on Appa, yip-yip" Aura pleaded her animal companion.
"Wow, that was truly amazing" Sokka remarked in sarcasm. Katara simply gave him a glare as Aura turned, looking annoyed as she began to defend her sweet bison.
"Appa's just tired. A little rest, and he'll be soaring through the sky, you'll see." Aura snapped. She smiled at them happily, turning back to the front to steer, while Sokka internally wondered if this new female was just as bipolar as his sister.
Zuko's Ship
Zuko looked towards the front of the ship into the open waters as his uncle walked up behind him.
"I'm going to bed now" Iroh told Zuko. Seeing no answer, Iroh released a loud yawn, "Yep a man needs his rest." The elderly man slouched in small defeat when Zuko once again gives no answer, "Prince Zuko, you need your sleep. Even if you're right and the Avatar is alive, you won't find him. Your father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, tried and failed."
"Because their honor didn't hinge on the Avatar's capture" Zuko replied sternly. "Mine does. This coward's hundred years of hiding is over." Finally, he was going to capture the Avatar and his father was going to welcome him home with open arms.
With Appa, Aura, Sokka, and Katara
Katara crawled towards Aura, "Hey."
"Hey. What'cha thinking about?" Aura inquired with a smile.
"I guess I was wondering, with you being an airbender and all, if you had any idea what happened to the Avatar" Katara asked, looking at her with hope. Aura gave her a shocked look, not having expected that question, but at the same time, was worried about her reaction if she were to tell the truth.
"Uh no, I didn't know him, I knew people that knew him, but I didn't, sorry." Aura lied, looking at anything but Katara. She really needed to work on being a better liar. Cut her some slack, the Air Nomads were extremely honest people!
"Oh ok, just curious" Katara muttered, looking down in disappointment, "Good night."
"Sleep tight" Aura said turning around. She crossed her legs and looked at her feet as guilt filled her very being. From lying or from running away, she didn't know, but she had a feeling that it was both at the same time...
Aura's Nightmare
Thunder crashed loudly, forcing Aura awake, before she sat up with a gasp. She looked around in fear as lightning and rain crashed down onto the earth. Aura quickly grabbed Appa's reins, tightening her grip in her fear. She screamed, as she tried to steer Appa out of the storm. They both fell into the water, before coming up, gasping for air. Appa moaned loudly as a wave crashed over them, forcing them back under the harsh water. Aura, unconscious, released the reins as they slowly sank farther down.
Suddenly, however, her eyes opened wide, glowing brightly with her tattoos. She fisted her hands together as the water around her and Appa glows, formed into a sphere, and freezed together. "Aura, Aura wake up!"
World of the Living
Aura quickly sat up, gasping. She looked around frantically, to find herself inside what seemed to be an igloo. The younger girl she had befriended was looking at her with worry.
"It's ok, you in the village now" Katara assure her. The waterbender was scared when she heard Aura whimpering and crying out, but calmed when she found the poor girl was just having a nightmare. Aura began to put her shirt back on, as she was only wearing her pants and underwrappings, as Katara observed her tattoos, which wrapped around her body. Aura finished putting her shirt on, and Katara grabbed her wrist, smiling as she pulled her new friend outside. Aura exclaimed in surprise, not having expected Katara to drag her out, and grabbed her staff.
Sokka was sitting outside the tent and ignored Aura when she gave him a flirting wink as Katara pulled her past. His younger sister all but dragged Aura in front of the tribe.
"Aura, this is the entire village. Entire village this is Aura" Katara introduced happily.
Aura put her fists together and bowed in respect as tradition, while the village simply looked at her in shock and silence. "Uh, why are they all looking at me like that? Did Appa sneeze on me?" Aura asked Katara, confused, before an old woman walked forward.
"Well, no one has seen an airbender for a hundred years. We thought all they were extinct. Until my granddaughter and grandson found you." She remarked.
"Extinct?" Aura exclaimed, obviously worried and upset. What did the woman mean by that? Did the monks and nuns hide themselves away from the world for some reason? Was it in shame because she ran away?!
"Aura, this is my grandmother" Katara said.
"Call me gran-gran." Gran-gran remarked.
Sokka walked over and grabbed the teenaged airbender's staff, examining the supposed weapon. "What is this? A weapon? You can't stab anything with this!"
Aura used her airbending to grab it back from Sokka. "It's not for fighting, it's for airbending" she told him with a proud smirk, before she opened the staff. The children seemed happy with that trick.
"Magic trick, do it again" one little girl said excitedly.
"Not magic, airbending." Aura explained, "It lets me control the air currents around my glider and fly."
"You know, last time I checked humans can't fly!" Sokka snapped, having had enough with this 'airbender' he and his sister rescued. And her small flirting was grating on his nerves too! Normally, he'd suck it all up, seeing how the only female in the tribe that was remotely his age was his sister, but he couldn't help but feel she was mocking him through her flirting...
Aura smirked at him again. "Oh yeah, check again!" She moved into position and jumped into the air. The village watched her fly around them, amazed at her abilities. Aura flew past them with a grin as Katara watched with excitement. The elder girl, however, wasn't watching where she was going and flew into Sokka's tower. Aura tried to get her head out but it had seemed to be stuck. She let out a grunt as she finally got out of the tower and fell to the ground. Katara gasped and rushed towards her, worried about her new friend.
"My watchtower!" Sokka exclaimed, upset. And now she destroyed his precious watchtower?! It took him forever to build it! How was he going to look out for danger now?!
"That was amazing!" Katara remarked, helping her out of the snow she got buried in.
Sokka ran to his now ruined tower, and then was buried by snow. His head popped out as he glared at the two girls in annoyance. "Great, you're an airbender, Katara's a waterbender, together you can just waste time all day long." Sokka ranted as he tried to dig himself out.
Aura looked at Katara, excited at the prospect of meeting a waterbender. She had friends in the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation, and obviously in the Temple, though recently she's been questioning if they really were her friends, but she hasn't had a friend in the Water Tribe before, let alone a bender! "You're a waterbender!" she exclaimed happily.
"Well sort of, not yet" Katara told her shyly, embarrassed that her bending wasn't as good as Aura's own. Gran-gran then arrived behind them.
"Alright, no more playing. Come on Katara, you have chores" Gran-gran said, leading Katara away from airbender.
"I told you, she's the real thing Gran-gran. I finally found a bender to teach me" Katara said happily.
"Katara, try not to put all your hope into this girl" Gran-gran told her, sternly.
"But she's special. I can tell. I sense she's fill with much wisdom." Katara replied. They both turn to look at Aura, who currently had her tongue stuck to her staff.
"See now my tongue is stuck on my staff" Aura said, or tried to at least, having been demonstrating to the young children surrounding her. A little boy grabbed her staff and yanked on it, seemingly testing how frozen her tongue was. Aura let out a muffled exclamation as the children laugh and clap, making the airbender smile a little. It was obvious that Katara's new friend liked children, and was willing to behave like one to entertain them. That, or she truly was childish and wasn't as wise as Katara seemed to think. Perhaps both…..
Zuko's Ship
Iroh was sitting on stool watching Zuko and two guards fight, instructing his nephew through his training. "Again" Iroh commanded. Zuko fired at the guards, and they retaliated almost immediately. Zuko flipped sideways, and positioned his hands towards both guards. Iroh sighed and stood, sternly scolding Zuko, "No, power and firebending come from the breath, not the muscles. The breath becomes energy in the body, the energy extends past your limbs and becomes fire!" The elderly firebender then demonstrated his own bending, "Get it right this time."
"Enough" Zuko snapped, making his way towards his uncle. "I've been drilling this sequence all day. Teach me the next set, I'm more than ready."
"No, you're impatient" Iroh retorted, "You have yet to master your basics. Drill it again" He then sat back down as Zuko growled with frustration. He kicked fire at one of the guards, making the poor man fly back.
"The sages tell us that the Avatar is the last airbender. He must be over a hundred years old by now. He's had a century to master the four elements, I'll need more than basic firebending to defeat him. You will teach me the advance set!" Zuko shouted. Why couldn't his uncle understand this?!
Zuko and Iroh both have a staring contest, before the older man, albeit reluctantly, gave in. "Very well, but first I must finish my roast duck." Zuko wore a look of disgust on his face as he watched his uncle, disturbingly, ate his meal, "Num, num, num."
At the Water Tribe Village
"Now men, it's important that you show no fear when facing a firebender. In the Water Tribe, we fight to the last man standing. For without courage how can we call ourselves men." Sokka lectured. To a six little boys...
"I gotta pee!" one boy cried, raising his hand.
"Listen, until your fathers' return home from the war, their counting on you to be the men of this tribe and that means no potty breaks!" Sokka tried to explained to them.
"But I really gotta go!" the boy continued to whine.
Sokka sighed in exasperation, "Ok, who else has to go." All the boys he was teaching raised their hands, making Sokka facepalm as his sister walked up to him.
"Have you seen Aura? Gran-gran said she disappeared over an hour ago" Katara said with a bit of worry, before Aura exited out of the bathroom.
"Wow, everything freezes in there!" She joked to the little boys, all of them laughing.
"UGH! Katara get her out of here, this lesson is for warriors only!" Sokka pleaded.
"WEE!" a boy yelled out in excitement. Aura was allowing the little boys to slide down Appa's tail, which was resting on a spear to hold it up a little. Katara laughed as the children happily slid into a pile of snow. Sokka became angered and stormed over to Aura and Appa.
"Stop! Stop it right now!" Sokka shouted at them, "What's wrong with you?! We don't have time for fun and games with a war going on!"
"What war?" Aura asked in confusion as she leapt off of Appa, "What're you talking about?" There wasn't any war going on. All the nations were peacefully living in harmony! There hadn't been a war in centuries! Sure, there were small disputes between some places, but that was it.
Katara and Sokka exchanged a confused glance. "You're kidding right?" Sokka asked. Aura tilted her head towards them, not understanding what either were talking about nor why they were looking at her as if she had lost her mind. But she was quickly distracted.
"PENGUIN!" Aura screamed excitedly. The penguin in the distance noticed her not so welcoming expression and hurriedly waddled away as fast as it could, while Aura rushed after it.
"She's kidding, right?" Sokka asked, dumbfounded, Katara who just shrugs.
Katara arrived at the edge of the ice, where all the penguins had gather to discuss what to do about the new menace that had entered their domain. Aura, the destroyer of peace. "Aura!" Katara called out, and smiled when she spotted said girl wandering in the middle fo the group of penguins.
"Hey, come on little guy. Wanna go sledding?" Aura laughed, trying to catch one of the many penguins. She then slipped and fell into the snow, when she missed the one she was after. The teen shook the snow out of her face and chuckled up at Katara, "As you can see, I have a way with animals." As if to prove it, she began to act like a penguin, making Katara laugh, "Gna, gnagna, gna!"
"Aura, I'll help you how to catch a penguin, if you teach me waterbending" Katara suggested, watching the older girl be dragged by a penguin she tried to catch. Aura let go of the penguin and looked over at Katara.
Aura gave her an apologetic smile, while standing back onto her feet, "I would agree, except, I'm an airbender, not a waterbender. Isn't there someone in your tribe that can teach you?"
"No, you're looking at the only waterbender in the whole south pole" Katara replied sadly. The other waterbenders were taken by the Fire Nation years ago, not to mention what happened to her mother….
"Well that's not right. A waterbender needs to master water. What about the North Pole? Isn't there another Water Tribe up there. Maybe they have waterbenders that could teach you" Aura suggested.
"Maybe, but we haven't had contact with our sister tribe in a long time. It's not exactly 'turn right at the second glacier'. It's on the other side of the world." Katara explained.
"But you forget, I have a flying bison. Appa and I can personally give you a ride to the North Pole. Katara, we're gonna find you a waterbending master!" Aura remarked happily. She can finally have a flying buddy other than Appa! Traveling without another human to talk to was getting to her. But now she might have a new companion! Best day ever!
"That's, I mean, I don't know. I've never left home before." Katara replied, having doubts about that plan.
"Well, you think about it. But in the meantime can you teach me how to catch a penguin?" Aura pleaded with teary eyes, making Katara smile.
"Ok listen closely, Pupil Aura, penguin catching is an ancient and sacred art, observe." Katara said, taking out a fish and throwing it to Aura. The airbender caught the fish and like magic, all the penguin waddled over to her. Aura laughed giddily as she was trampled by penguins trying to eat the fish.
Soon enough, both girls had caught penguins of their own were racing down the snowy hills, both cheering loudly as they slid. Aura rode onto an uphill slope jump, flying over Katara before landing in front of the other girl. The waterbender soon caught up to the teen and they both laugh as they continue to slide.
"I haven't done this since I was a kid!" Katara shouted over the high winds to Aura.
"You are a kid!" Aura exclaimed happily. They laugh together as they slid through a tunnel of snow, both criss-crossing down the tunnel. The penguins stop once they exit the cavern and the two girls pause in awe of the scene before them. It was an old Fire Nation ship trapped in ice, looking as though it had been in the middle of a battle.
"Woah! What is that?" Aura asks excitedly. She hadn't seen anything like it, but it looked cool! It looked like one of the ships Kuzon had told her about when she was visiting the Fire Nation!
"A fire navy ship" Katara answered, anger clear in her voice as she remembered the legend behind said ship, "And a very bad memory for my people." Aura walked towards it, hoping for a peek inside, as Katara reached out for her with a warning, "Aura, stop! We're not aloud to go near it! The ship could be boobytrapped."
However, the airbender ignored said warning, simply turning to Katara as she continued her trek, "If you want to be a bender, you have to let go of fear." Katara looked downin a moment of thought, before, reluctantly, following after her.
They walked inside curiously, Katara gripping Aura's shoulder, as though fearful that they'd be separated. They moved into a room filled with weapons, Aura taking note of all the ones Kuzon had taught her how to use, much to the monks' displeasure. But according to him, not matter how peaceful their nation was, the airbenders would, eventually, need to fight against those who weren't. "This ship has haunted my tribe since Gran-gran was a little girl. It was a part of the Fire Nation's first attacks." Katara explained to Aura, who turned to her in pure confusion.
"Ok, back up. I have friends all over the world, even in the Fire Nation. I've never seen any war!" Aura exclaimed, examining the weapons.
Katara furrowed her eyebrows, "Aura, how long were you in that iceberg?"
"I don't know, a few day maybe?"
"I think it was more like a hundred years."
"What? That's impossible! Do I look like a 116 year old woman to you?" Aura exclaimed, gesturing to her clearly young body.
"Think about it. The war is about a century year old. You don't know about it, because, somehow, you were in there the whole time. It's the only explanation!" Katara explained, as Aura gained a look of horror at the realization. She leaned against the wall and slide down as her mind went numb.
"A hundred years, I can't believe it" Aura muttered, her face filled with despair. Who knew how many of her friends had passed! Gyatso surely was one of them, having been a rather old man himself when she ran away. If she was lucky, then maybe at least one of her old friends were blessed enough by the spirits to have survived to be over a hundred. She'll just have to search for them once she checks up back home. The descendants of her old airbending friends surely know about her, and she'll just have to explain why exactly she left. They'll understand and welcome her back with open arms! And this time, she won't be a coward, nor take her family for granted again.
"I'm sorry Aura" Katara said, saddened for her new friend's predicament, "Maybe, somehow, there's a bright side to all this."
Aura was quiet for a moment, before weakly smiling up at the waterbender, "Well I did get to meet you and Sokka."
"Come on, let's get out of here" Katara returned the smile as she helped Aura up, before they walked into another room. "Aura, let's head back, this place is creepy" Katara suggested, starting to get the feeling of dread. And then, Aura tripped over a wire, before a cage appeared over the doorway. They both gasped and grabbed the bars, both trying in vain to force them open.
"What was that you said about boobytraps?" Aura asked, believing she should've listened in the first place. Then the pipes and alarms began to go off, making Katara gasp in fear as a flare rose into the air.
"Uh-oh" Aura frowned as the flare exploded in the sky. The older teen saw a hole in the ceiling, gaining an escape plan. "Hold on tight!" She warned, before the older girl grabbed the waterbender princess style, and jumped out of the hole, laughing at Katara's screams.
Zuko's Ship
Zuko followed the flare through a telescope and spotted two figures jumping out of the ship, one holding the other. "The last airbender. Quite agile for his old age. Wake my Uncle! Tell him, I've found the Avatar" Zuko ordered, and moved his gaze back into the telescope. He turned towards the direction the two figures were running towards, his determination growing, "As well as his hiding place."
